The Biggest Drawback of Wind Turbines

Zac Linzmeier
Wind turbines are an excellent technology for producing your own electricity in an environmentally friendly manner. Much is known about all of the benefits that wind turbines can provide; however, there seems to be little mention of the biggest drawback of wind turbines. Learn more about it here.

Wind turbines for your home are a great new technology. With recent drops in start up costs, due largely to kits and do-it-yourself models hitting the market, wind turbines are now very affordable. They save you big on electricity and help reduce your negative impact on the environment. However, wind turbines do have a drawback.

The biggest drawback of wind turbines rests within the obvious, the fact that they need wind to generate power. On a clam day or in many regions it is simply not feasible to produce power off of wind turbines. Even in the windiest areas there are bound to be days where the wind is scarce or non existent. This is the biggest problem with wind turbines. Fortunately wind turbines have been around for a long time and people who experienced this problem in the past have come up with some great solutions.

The best solution to lack of wind, and its effect on wind turbines, is a backup. The idea is that you run on regular electricity from the power company as well so when there is no wind you still have power to your home. You can take the idea of a backup in a few other ways as well. You can have environmentally friendly backup solutions, which many people do. This includes coupling your wind turbine with some solar panels, as you almost always have either sun or wind. Take this idea a step further and purchase many additional batteries. This will ensure that you always have a backup of power, enough to last you for a few days even. This works in a simple fashion because you don't draw power directly from the wind turbine in the first place. Instead you actually charge a battery with your wind turbine and then your home draws power from the battery to use as electricity. Throwing in additional batteries to your circuit means that you can save up reserve power for a calm day.

Hopefully now you have learned a bit more about the biggest drawback of wind turbines. You should have also learned, however, that there are solutions to bypassing this problem and wind turbines are still a great source of alternative energy for your home.
