The Biggest Loser Couples Premiere Is a Real Winner

The Drama Continues

Last night, on the premiere of the Biggest Loser Couples Edition, the audience got some changes, some surprises and some reasons why working out with someone you know and love can be helpful but sometimes the worst thing in the world.

Tempers and eyebrows rose last night with the changing game and some of the things people said about and did with their partners. The difference this time on the biggest loser is now since it is couple, there are not two teams anymore or even three teams. There are ten teams. Two people are on each team and two people get voted off each week. And there is only one team of people who didn't know each other before. Otherwise there are husbands and wives, mothers and sons, fathers and daughters, best friends, etc.

The challenges and weigh-ins were exciting, but the drama between the teammates was newsworthy. An ex-husband and wife couple decided to work together on the show but when they got to the weigh-in, the ex-husband was really harsh when the host asked what happened in the marriage. Definitely an awful question to ask and The Biggest Loser should reconsider their host, but nevertheless, he said because "someone didn't work hard enough". Then he laughed. The ex-wife started crying, obviously. Idiotically, the host asked, "Why are you crying?"She answered, "We said we wouldn't say anything to hurt each other". He, of course, apologized but it didn't seem like enough to the ex-wife. We'll see what happens next week.

Then there were two best friends, one of whom didn't work hard enough to win either challenge. And they wondered why they ended up below the yellow line, in the hot seat for elimination. It seems that this time on the show, exactly what Gillian said is happening, the couples "brought their enablers with them", something she wasn't happy about. Some couples really seemed like they didn't work as hard as the individuals, maybe because they aren't necessarily doing it just for themselves which is a great motivator. And then other couples know really how to motivate each other.

The men who weighed 799 pounds when they started, the most of all the other couples, also lost the most weight and the biggest percentage of body weight the first week which is normal since they did weigh more than anyone. They ended up in first place and since they worked so hard, I pick them for the winners.

But the most surprising and disturbing part of the biggest loser last night is the father/daughter couple. The daughter brought her 63-year old father there to help him at his weight of 363 pounds to lose some so that he could stick around for his daughter and his grandchildren. But when getting to the camp, the father seemed to tire out easily and was surprised to be doing so. When the daughter explained to him that she was tired too and she hurt too, the father blamed his age on everything and said he couldn't work out right then. Eventually he awoke from his naps and worked out, losing 17 pounds in 1 week, while the daughter only lost 7, half of what most of the other women lost. But the daughter was still upset that he didn't seem to want to be there. Then he all but told her that he didn't want to be there and she got even more, as she said, "pissed."

When they fell below the yellow line along with the two best friends, they had a talk with all the rest of the people at the camp to convince them that they should be the ones who stayed. Unfortunately for the daughter, the father didn't make much of a case. In fact, he said, "It doesn't matter to me", speaking of the vote. He told them to vote whichever way they liked and he could work out at home. At this point the daughter broke down in tears and begged them not send her and her father home. She told them that it mattered to her and she wanted to save his life.

But again he was complacent about the situation and they ended up getting sent home by the other players. And one player even told him that he didn't think he worked hard enough to save his own life so that he could be around for his children and grandchildren. The biggest surprise was that when the daughter expressed to him that she really wanted to stay, he simply said, "I know you want to stay but we can do this at home". The selfishness of the father after all the hard work for months they both put into getting on the show was a shocker. He took up a spot of another person who could have been seriously in jeopardy of dying.

The worst part is that they showed them six weeks later after the show ended for them. They had both said they would be losing a lot after working at home. But in 6 weeks the father only lost 20 pounds and the daughter only lost 13. It was surprising and devastating to a show that is supposed to teach people how to get motivated enough to save their own lives.

But next week I'm sure there will be people who are there to really lose weight.
