The Black Friday Special 37 Inch Element LCD HDTV Model FLX3711B: A Review

A Large Screen HDTV for Less Than $500

Consumers can thank advancements in flat panel television technology over the past couple of years for the price drops they'll see this holiday shopping season. Now virtually anyone can find a flat panel HDTV that will fit within the constraints of their budget. Black Friday is one of the best days to find good deals on electronics like LCD televisions and the 37" Element LCD HDTV model FLX3711B is the perfect example. This already reasonably priced television is featured in Circuit City's Black Friday sales circular for less than $500. I have taken the opportunity to spend some time with one of these sets so I can let you know just how well it performs.

Product Overview:

The Element FLX3711B has the typical flat panel appearance with a black bezel framing its 37 inch screen. It comes with a matching black stand that I found to wobble slightly when agitated however it is adequately sturdy. The screen isn't overly glossy and operates effectively in a well lit room. The viewing angle is on par for its category so you won't have to worry about setting up your furniture around the "sweet spot".

The high definition picture is displayed at 720p which is perfect for this size. The extra lines of pixels would be virtually imperceptible at this size if it were full HD. The standard definition broadcast is also pretty good on this set. The speakers are advertised as simulating surround sound, but there is no difference to my untrained ear. They could perform a little better but there is always the option of an inexpensive home theater system if the speakers get on your nerves.

There is a little bit of connectivity lacking in this high definition television. There is only 1 HDMI input. Televisions of this size typically have at least 2 and usually its 3. However there are 2 composite and 2 component inputs, so other options do exist. There is also a VGA option in case you want to hook this television to your notebook or computer.

Product Value:

Typically priced at around $600 this television is already a great value for its size. It is advertised at $499 in Circuit City's Black Friday sales circular making it truly a steal. I found that this size HDTV works great in the living room, yet is small enough to go into the bed room. It is the perfect entry level flat panel television.
