The Black Seeds - Great Contemporary Reggae Music

New Zealand Group Grows Magical Sound

Morgan Summerfield
Do you like contemporary Reggae? Do you like a pulsing, potent beat with a hint of soul? If you answered yes and you have not yet tasted the heady concoction brewed by The Black Seeds, you are in for a treat! It is truly difficult to stay in your seat when The Black Seeds are performing their musical magic.

Firmly woven into the New Zealand music fabric, The Black Seeds are continuing to grow their music and their fan base. A sexy pulsing reggae beat teases the body into motion, while the enticing male voices seduce the listener's ears with that hint of an accent that always gets the girls. After listening to Cool Me Down, this author did indeed need a cool down.

Their debut album, Keep On Pushing, in 2001 was just the beginning. Keep On Pushing was named one of the top 50 albums of the year by Rip It Up Magazine. With a steamy mix of reggae, funk and soul, these New Zealanders reached gold sales. But these gentlemen were no one hit wonders. Their second album, On The Sun, was released in 2004 and went double platinum. Into The Dojo, their follow up release, (name coming from their studio that used to be a Karate Dojo) gets another platinum.

To look at these guys, you wouldn't guess the music hidden inside. The band is ten years old, so they must have been babies when they started. If you take a look at them in their natural state, you will see that they are not at all afraid of being themselves. According to their online press release,

"THE BLACK SEEDS ARE:

Barnaby Weir - Vocals & Guitar

Daniel Weetman - Vocals & Percussion

Mike Fabulous - Guitar & Percussion

Nigel Patterson - Keyboard

Jarney T Murphy - Drums

Tim Jaray - Bass

Jabin Ward - Sax

Andrew Christiansen - Trumpet."

The 2008 Black Seed twenty show European tour ended early due to illness in one of the members' family, but it didn't stop the release of their newest album. Solid Ground, was released August 11, in New Zeland, Europe and Japan.
