The Black Squirrels of Michigan

Linda Louise Johnson
Walking down the road

along Lake Michigan

watching while the lazy sun

slides down the sky

minutes before appearing to

plunge into blue waters

at the edge of the horizon;

The flowers and grass

making one last splash

of vivid color

before dark,

when a squirrel

dances across my path

dressed in sleek black fur,

Saturday night elegance

running up a tree trunk.

There were black squirrels around campus back when I was in college. They were not as common as the red and gray squirrels, though. I think they're cute.

I love black squirrels. They remind me of chocolate caramels. What a cool topic for a poem!

I've never seen a black squirrel! Thanks for your wonderful point about private vs public schools on my homeschooling article.

In Arkansas, we have the Fox squirrels, gray squirrels, and black squirrels which I have heard some people say are a branch of the Fox squirrels. I have heard of a red suirrel but never seen one and don't know if they are a pet squirrel or if they grow wild in some places. Great Article!

I'll occasionally see black squirrels where I live too. I love watching squirrels. They used to come up and eat right out of our hands at the University of Chicago when I worked there (I'm sure they probably still do).
