The Blue Thong Society Vs. The Red Hat Society
Two Women's Social Groups Appeal to the Young at Heart
Read more about the Red Hat Society in another article I wrote HERE.
Blue Thong Beginnings
In 2006, four Southern California women got together to start a trendier women's social group that caters to those born between 1946 and 1964. Their desire to be women who are defined by their actions, rather than their age, struck a chord with baby boomers who look and act differently. They chose a flirty blend of flip flops, panty and the color blue to identify their new friendship network.
The founders of the Blue Thong Society, Mary Jo Wallo, Jackie Tushinsky, Mary Ellen Wiegand and Kelley Golden, came up with the catch phrase - Fight Frump! and a Blue Martini for their signature drink.
Blue Thong Membership
Unlike the Red Hat Society, this group charges dues and requires each chapter to support a local charity. The membership age range is anywhere from 30-ish to early 60's. It attracts women who are fun, smart, irreverent, young at heart, fit, philanthropic, and feel they need to socialize with other women, but in a more organized and service oriented manner than what the Red Hats offer. By 2008, the Blue Thong Society had grown to more than 6,000 members in 29 states.
Blue Thong Events
The Blue Thong ladies can be seen attending plays, going on hikes and taking cruises together. The group gets together monthly for potluck or restaurant dinners and Blue Martinis. The dress code is casual and members often wear blue in the form of blue jeans or a comfortable blue top. They might wear blue thongs on their feet and have a giggle as they show off a bit of their other blue thong to their Society sisters.
Blue Thong Foundation
The social networking group is also a charitable organization. Their Project Foundation plans to build Blue Houses for deserving women.
Doc Thong
The group has a commitment to healthy living, as shown through their link to Dr. Pamela Peeke, an expert in the fields of nutrition, exercise and stress. Dr. Peeke is an internationally acclaimed physician and scientist, and strong supporter of the Blue Thong Society and shares her wit and wisdom with other members.
If you're more of a thong person than a hat person, and like the ideals of this vibrant group of women, there could be a Blue Thong Society chapter in your area that will welcome you with open arms. If there isn't, contact the Blue Thong Society and ask about opening a chapter in your community.

Post a CommentI don't really understand the difference between the groups. I've seen the Red Hat Society Chicago chapters do pretty much the exact same stuff. The hats don't even have to be big. Some ladies I saw wore red hats that were about the size of a Kangol. *shrug*
Only in California!
: )
I can't wait to see the calendar..:>))
