The Book

With a Twist

April Higney
She flipped the pages of the book, analyzing,
searching for something in the words to connect,
in her increasing silent voice,
her thought drifts,
"it is he", she wants to yell aloud,
at the woman in the story casting off the rather supposed
dull character of a man.
"But you are a fool!"
She takes a deep breath, closing the book,
as she has read many times,
knows the story, line by line.
Every time she views the words, she can't help but reflect,
back to him.

He was quiet, his subtle words,
bored her,
she needed excitement,
she needed someone else in her life.
She spent her day narrowing the odds,
in the hustle of her city life,
finding excitement in his voice,
as he danced with her.
They talked, laughed,
and she stepped into the arms of another.
More like herself.
"Greedy fool" she says to herself.

She flipped the pages of the book,
searching, searching,
"but why, why would you walk away?!"
"it is he", she wants to yell aloud.
quietly, quietly, "but maybe, if she were me,
but I would not walk away,
a fool I would not be."

Silence broken in a quiet notion,
a gentle knock upon her door.
"A package miss" the awkward fumbling delivery man.
Hands her the signature pad, and notices the book.
He chuckles at it, "her boring ex lives downstairs, a writer too, seems like a good fella,
poor sorry sap, after that book, I'd be surprised if he got a date ever again."
He hands her the box and hurries off.

She stood in silence, shocked, her heart shook.
The wrong box,
it belongs to...no it couldn't be...can't possibly be...
"it is...it is he"
Curiosity has her wanting to open it...
Sensibility, to return it.
She had passed him many times without knowing,
with smiles, subtle glances,
the friendly "hello, lovely day to you"
She gasps...nervous,
but knocks upon his door.

He answers in his usual smile.
His eyes glisten with her appearance,
to himself, "it is she...it is she" he sighs.
"Thank you for returning my package."
He invites her in.
"It is she"
The one he had written of,
love,
from his own book.
Meant to be, meant to be.
His heart shook.

Wow what a surprise ending, and a lovely romantic happy one. I hope that now they have met they can drop their shyness with each other.
