The Border Collie: Dog Breed Profile

Rielle
Lassie, that is what comes to mind when most hear the word collie. But do they know that the border collie is named the smartest breed of all? Border collies are natural herders and very, very dedicated and good, at what they do. I know this because I have a half border collie and half blue heeler female named, Lucy. She has always herded my children, especially the smaller child. She will herd them up whether they are running, walking, riding a bicycle or skateboard and she will grab pant legs and pull them back to the yard. Also, the collie in her, makes her very protective of owners, children even smaller dogs and puppies. On one occasion Lucy was banned from the house, she climbed onto the roof and into the upstairs hallway window. The kids laughed and so she continued to do it.

A Border Collie, being of such intelligence, can and will become bored easily. This is a popular breed for farms as they are natural herders. The breed was registered with the AKC in 1995. She will not do well alone for she needs stimulation. Without company, she will look to entertain herself and may become destructive as any smart breed will.

These are very loyal dogs and super friendly. The border collie is not at all aggressive but more of a peace keeper. Don't forget she is also very protective and will fight for her family if necessary but only if necessary. These beauties are really good with children, even small ones. They love children, just don't forget that herding instinct includes children and teach her to be gentle. It should not be a problem as they are naturally gentle and extremely easy to train. The Border Collie is also easy to please, they are very happy with a pat on the head and well deserved praise from their family. They lead an active life, loving to run and have tasks to perform. Lifespan is approximately 12 years. They will weigh between 27 and 45 pounds fully grown. They have some health concerns, such as cataracts, epilepsy, allergies, deafness and seizures. Good breeding is very important, so know what you are looking for before buying.

Border collies make wonderful family pets. They want to be a loved member of the family. Their loving, intelligent ways make it easy for them to steal hearts. They need plenty of running time to be happy and healthy and if at all possible give this breed a job or task to show off their intelligence.
