The Bounty Hunter Movie Review

Mr. And Mrs. Smith Formula Seems to Not Work for Every Romantic Comedy

J G Hodnette
Mr. and Mrs. Smith introduced the world to a new kind of romantic comedy: the assassin couple. The Bounty Hunter takes this direction with romantic comedies and makes the relationship a convict and bounty hunter. How does this direction work for the film?

Plot

In the story, Nicole Hurley (Jennifer Aniston) is a news columnist who is sent to court for assaulting a police officer. She skips her court date to meet some mysterious lead and a bounty hunter is hired to track her down and bring her in. Coincidentally, this bounty hunter is Milo Boyd (Gerard Butler) who is an ex-cop and ex-husband of Nicole. He is more than happy to hunt down his hated ex-wife and the story begins. The story continues and it becomes obvious that the two will fall for one another again through their fake hate throughout the film. This ends up happening by the solving of a thriller type mystery together.

Acting

Gerard Butler has a tendency to be gruff in his presentation and not particularly convincing. Jennifer Aniston is as cutesy as ever, but it perhaps doesn't lend itself too well to the role that she is playing. The couple's interactions seem minimal and unsatisfying.

Reception

The problems with the film are numerous. It is agreed that Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler look good on screen together, but the dialogue of the film is boring and seems to only move the movie forward. Gerard plays a cave-man type male who lacks the sensitivity of typical male romantic heroes. What's really missing from the film is an indication of what really connects the pair. Without this seemingly obvious requirement, the film seems to be more of a parody of an action packed romantic comedy than anything else. The movie has cliche after action cliche which fail to impress and entertain. What the movie does have is a few funny moments and the classic acting cuteness of Jennifer Aniston.

The film is not the worst one in the world and Aniston or Butler fans should check the movie out. But don't expect too much. The movie has received from a 2 to a 5/10.
