'The Boys Are Back' with Clive Owen on DVD January 26 - Movie Review
The Boys Are Back is a Surprising Movie from the Versatile Clive Owen
The Boys Are Back is a tender examination of what happens when a loving husband but often absent father loses his wife. Based upon a true story of Australian Simon Carr, Clive Owen plays successful sports writer Joe Warr, happily married to his second wife Katie and the father of a precocious six-year-old son named Artie (Nicholas McAnulty). After Joe loses Katie to cancer, viewers discover he has a young teenage son, Henry (George MacKay), from his first marriage - a son Joe left when the child was the same age as Artie. Already heartbroken, drinking too much and trying to discover how to relate to and parent little Artie, things get more complicated for Joe when Henry wants to come stay for an indefinite visit.
Henry is at first something of an outsider, looking in on Joe and Artie, but he is starting to find his precarious footing in the odd household when Joe's boss insists Joe leaves town to cover a tennis match. Joe tries with no success to find a place for the boys to stay - his efforts are somewhat hampered by his own pride. Ultimately, Henry tells Joe he will look out for Artie for Joe's two-day trip, and Joe makes the decision to leave the two boys home alone. Things don't go well, and Joe returns home to find Artie at his grandmother's and Henry on a plan back to his mother.
The Boys Are Back is the story of loss, as well as the chronicle of a father's love for his two sons. Somehow the three men learn how to love each other deeply and find that together, they are a family after all.
While Clive Owen is great as a rugged action hero in movies like Shoot Em Up and Children of Men, the nuanced performance he gives in movies like The Boys Are Back show what a fine actor Owen is. The Boys Are Back is rated PG -13 for some bad language and mature subject matter (the death of a mother).
