The Bravest Boys in the World - Boy Scout Jamboree in Iraq

Ranger
The Boy Scouts were originally founded with National preparation for war in mind. Nations in Europe were forming youth para-military groups before World War One. America's response, the Boy Scouts, demonstrated a lifestyle of resourcefulness, and moral character that could only be birthed by the unique American character. This unique American character is known as "American Exceptionalism" and still continues to attract the imagination of the World.

Walt Disney had a special fondness for the Boy Scouts, as anyone who remembers Fred McMurray in the movie "Follow Me Boys" can attest. The list of Eagle Scouts reads like a list of American "Who's Who." including everyone from Presidents to your neighbors. The good works of Boy Scouts have enriched humanity.

Who then should attack the Boy Scouts? Are they not everyone's friend? Why did the Democrat Party boo the Boy Scouts who presented the American Flag at their own National Convention in 1992? For the same reason the leader of the Democrats, Harry Ried, has declared the war in Iraq lost? By all accounts, the lefties HATE the Boy Scouts for many reasons. They hate the Scouts because Scouting knows how to educate kids and all the liberals can offer is a 17th century didactic model of education. In Scouts, learning is accomplished primarily through doing. Kids learn so much more when they are involved in doing things and figuring things out, than when they have to sit in their seats and be lectured to and given boring rote tasks of little relevance.

Through out the Islamic world, Scouting has never taken root. The Islamic concept of kismet, or fate, is not compatible with the optimistic can-do egalitarian creed of the Boy Scouts. The high goal of the American involvement in Iraq is to introduce democracy in a region of the world which has only known dictatorship and worse. The act of participation in voting is an act of self-less, death defying bravery. And so it is with the Boy Scouts. Al-Qeada would chop off the head of a child earning a merit badge, or helping a little old lady across the street. Kite-flying has been punished by death by the Taliban. Who then, shall stand with the future leaders of Iraq, as they put their young lives on the line to build a future of self-reliance and promise?

Those who love Scouting will be proud to hear that American servicemen have started Boy Scout Troops in Iraq. And have conducted the first Scouting Jamboree since Saddam Hussien took power in 1978. Please view the following link on youtube to see simple bravery. Bravery for children to be - thrifty, clean, and reverent.

Being an Eagle Scout, Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow, Silver Beaver & District Award of Merit recipient and long time Scout Leader/Volunteer, I can attest to the values that the Boy Scouts of America are instilling in today's youth. I have seen socially troubled kids, kids from broken families and kids who have no one to look up to or trust become some of the finest citizens any country would be proud to claim because of the Scouting program. I have been and always will be proud of my association with the Boy Scouts of America. The lessons I learned as a youth have helped make me the successful adult I am today!

That's all the children of Iraq need, to be taught the doctrine you quote, of "American exceptionalism" you are right about AE, it is stirring something around the world. But it's not imagination, its disdain.

Very well written and I am glad to see that things are truly making a change for the better in a country that has been oppressed for so long.

Good article. Scouting is awesome and I'll certainly try to get my own kids involved. I did it and loved it... but I never made Eagle, only Life.
