The Breakfast Club: Where Are They Now?

An Update on the Actors from This 1985 Classic

D. S. Ploshay
It seems like just yesterday that a group of five teenagers-who couldn't be more different from each other-were sentenced to spend a Saturday in detention in The Breakfast Club. There was the jock, the princess, the nerd, the misfit and the loser. Their paths wouldn't have crossed if it had not been for this punishment.
Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald, Emilo Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall and Judd Nelson make up the five-some of actors portraying the teenagers in The Breakfast Club. If you take these five, and add Rob Lowe, Demi Moore and Andrew McCarthy to the mix, you get the 'Brat Pack' of the 1980s, or a troupe of actors that seem to have played in every wildly popular film directed by John Hughes or Joel Schumacher. (The press coined the term 'brat pack' as a play on the 1960s Rat Pack of actors.)

But it wasn't yesterday The Breakfast Clubcame out. It was 1985. Twenty-plus years later, what are the stars of this classic teen movie up to?

Anthony Michael Hall (Brian Johnson)

Anthony Michael Hall played several stereotypically geeky and goofy teen roles in the 80s. So, many did not recognize Hall when he made a huge comeback in 2002 on USA's top-rated series The Dead Zone, as a buffer, older Johnny Smith. This show put Hall back in the spotlight, however it was his portrayal of Bill Gates in the made-for-TV Pirates of Silicon Valley that landed him the USA role. Hall also appeared in Freddy Got Fingered and starred as Robert "Mutt" Lange (Shania Twain's husband) in VHI's Hysteria: The Def Leppard Story.

Molly Ringwald (Claire Standish)

Probably the most notable of the 'Brat Pack,' red-headed Ringwald catapulted to success in the late 80s and early 90s. MTV named her #1 on the Top 100 Teen Stars list. Although she has guest starred on shows like The Medium, she has turned to the stage, currently touring with the show "Sweet Charity." She made a cameo appearance in the spoof Not Another Teen Movie.

Ally Sheedy (Allison Reynolds)

Ally Sheedy appeared in several notable roles shortly after The Breakfast Club, such as Maid to Order and St. Elmo's Fire. Recently, she has done some theater and also reunited with Anthony Michael Hall as a recurring guest star in his USA Series, The Dead Zone.

Emilio Estevez (Andrew "Andy" Clark)

Emilio Estevez had a successful run with the Mighty Ducks triology, as well as some other late 80s and early to mid 90s movies. Since then, he has been out of the spotlight until 2006's Bobby, which he wrote, directed and acted.

Judd Nelson (John Bender)

Judd Nelson has not been up to much lately as far as being in the spotlight goes. He does some writing for National Lampoon.
