The Buffalo Bills Will Soon Be Known as the Toronto Bills

On Thursday October 18th the Buffalo Bills have sent a formal request to the NFL to change their city of representation. The Buffalo Bills are one of the three New York football teams and they draw the least venue of the three.

The Buffalo Bills have requested to make a move to Canada. This is not a drastic move but it is very significant since this will be the first team to change cities in the formal NFL era. The Buffalo Bills want to move because they are drawing a majority of their fans from Canada already. Also Canadian football is rarely watched and has viewer ratings lower then the National League Championship Series. The viewer rating for the NLCS was a two point two so it really can not get much worse.

Another good reason the Buffalo Bills should move to Canada is to increase the market of the NFL. The possibilities of eventually allowing other cities in Canada to create teams and join the NFL are great. The regular season consists of sixteen games but with more teams the NFL season can go on even longer.

Currently the Buffalo Bills have a lease on their stadium until 2012 so they are not looking to move any time soon. They are currently looking to play pre-season and one regular season game a year in Toronto. Eventually I think the Buffalo Bills will move completely and become the Toronto Bills.

This would be a mile stone mark for the NFL. There have rarely been any games played out of the United States. The first time a NFL game was played out of the United States was in 2005 and the Miami Dolphins and New York Giants are going to play a game in at London's Wembly Stadium in two weeks.

There is defiantly a lasting effect on games played outside the United States. Many countries want to have American football since it is a sport with such action. The desire some countries have is so great they have made their own leagues. The Canada League is just one example but the real dream is for countries all over the globe to have teams that join the NFL and become part of the greatest league in professional sports.
