The Buffet Clarinet Lineup

Choosing the Right Clarinet

Kevin Choy
Are you a clarinet player? Whether you just started or have been playing for years, learning about clarinet models is important. Clarinets have many different levels. There's the beginner, intermediate, and professional. There are clarinets made for in between these skill levels, too. Today, I will be talking to you about the buffet clarinet lineup.

Buffet is a great clarinet model as it pretty much gives you a clarinet line to follow if you continue on your clarinet. It's very new user friendly, meaning anyone who plays clarinet can just grab a buffet clarinet and play on it with ease whether it's the professional model or the beginner model. Let's talk about the buffet models.

When you started clarinet years ago back in school, you probably started out with either something like a B10 or a B12 semi wood clarinet. This is an excellent beginner's clarinet as the price of this is very inexpensive for the sound quality it produces. The fingers are comfortable and the sound quality is great for a beginner's clarinet. When you continue on music into middle school or high school, you may want to think about switching to a higher quality instrument. The buffet E11 is your answer.

The buffet E11 is an intermediate clarinet that's made out of wood. If you hold the E11 compared to the B10 or B12, it's much heavier since it's made out of wood. Just like the other buffet clarinets, it's very easy to get used to this clarinet. The sound quality is much nicer and the key positions are more comfortable than the previous plastic models. The price of this is usually from 800-1000 dollar. E11 has a great sound quality, but if you're planning to go professional into music, you may want to think about getting the professional Buffet clarinet models.

When you reach this level of playing, you have many different options and models to choose from. For example, there's the Buffet R13, the RC, the Prestige, and more. These are all great sounding clarinets with few slight differences that distinguish one from another. All of these clarinets are very easy to get used to, have an incredible key position to make it so that you can play much faster and easier on the clarinet. The sound quality of this is very rich and open. These clarinets are in the 2-4 thousand dollar range, but you'll know it was worth it once you get these clarinets and play on them yourself.

Now before you buy any clarinets, try other brand clarinets too. There's lots of other great clarinet making brands such a Selmer, Cannonball, Leblanc, Yamaha, etc that also make outstanding clarinets. Try them and see which one you like. The clarinets vary greatly from one brand to another. For example, the Selmer recital clarinet is an excellent clarinet with a dark, deep, rich sound, but the key positioning is very different from buffet clarinets and takes a lot more air to blow in. In conclusion, experiment with many types of clarinets before buying it and choose the one that you like most.
