The Bumble Bee Goby: Brackish Goby

Shannon Frye
Most of you probably don't know what a brackish tank is. A brackish tank is not a saltwater tank or a freshwater tank. A brackish tank is a basic freshwater tank but you need to add a little bit of salt to the water. A brackish tank is a little bit of both tanks rolled into one. You can only place brackish fish in this type of aquarium. You will want to see how much salt is in the water when you purchase a fish from the pet store. One brackish fish that you can purchase is the Bumble Bee Goby. It's the only goby that you can purchase for your brackish tank.

To keep the Bumble Bee Goby alive you will need to hook up a heater to your fish tank. You will need to keep it at 70 to 80 degrees. You will want to hook up your light to a timer so that the light comes on and shuts off at certain times. This is to avoid heating up the tank and stressing out your fish. If the tank gets too warm the Bumble Bee Goby will get stressed out and become sick. The fish will usually get a bacterial illness known as Ich.

This fish stays very small so you can place this fish in an aquarium which is at least 5 gallons. If you want to have more than one fish you will need to purchase a large tank. You can place a number of brackish fish together in your aquarium. The Bumble Bee Goby is great because gobies stay very small and they are very peaceful fish. They spend most of their time sifting around in the sand searching for some food to eat. You will want to provide plenty of substrate for your goby.

You can feed this fish different types of fish flakes as well as different varieties of frozen foods such as brine shrimp. This fish is not a picky eater and you will have no problems keeping this fish alive. You can purchase this fish from a local Petco or Petsmart. You can usually buy the fish for somewhere around $2. This is perhaps one of the cheapest brackish fish that you can buy. You can purchase two of them if you would like to. You might possibly end up with little baby gobies drifting around your fish tank.

This fish will only become aggressive towards other aggressive or territorial fish. Most of the time it will keep to itself.
