The Cacophony of Silence

Brief Thoughts on Silence

David A. Reinstein, LCSW

Silent ringing
Unheard singing
Noiseless sound
Can abound
Where no obvious
Source
Can be seen or found.
Too soft
Not to listen.
Too loud
Not to hear.

The absence of color
Is called white
And the blend of them all
Creates black.
The absence of sound
Is silence
And the blend of them all
Creates chaos.
Is black to white
What silence is
To chaos?
Conundrum
Percussion;
A whispering tumult.

The deaf feel music
And the blind sense light;
It takes something more
Than physical senses
To know if things
Are really alright.
Sometimes light is bright,
Too bright for sight.
Soundless and sightless
A cacophony of
Shadowed silence
Stirs the air
Around and through us
Until we decide
Whether or not
To dare to care.

Nicely crafted piece. My favorite part is, "It takes something more Than physical senses To know if things Are really alright." I agree, they are more in tuned then some people who can see and hear. For instance myself. I should learn more from them. Thanks for sharing.

    Great poem!

Sound that contains all frequencies is called "white noise", so I guess the absence of all frequencies would be "black noise". I guess we are all experiencing synesthesia in our language.
