The Campaign for a 'Truthiness' Rally Reaching Fever Pitch

Heather Chadwick
The Colbert faithful are a mighty army. They flock to their leader at the ready, prepped to defend truthiness in all its glory. When FOX News' own Glenn Beck staged his "Restoring Honor" rally at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. last month, the Colbert Nation came up with its own idea: holding a "Restoring Truthiness" rally on Oct. 10, 2010 ,also at the Lincoln Memorial. They have created Facebook pages and web campaigns; the Facebook group currently has over 37,000 members, while both the Facebook page and website have already been mentioned by Stephen Colbert on The Colbert Report.

The "Restoring Honor" rally, in all its media hype, managed to attract thousands of attendees. Beck had been promoting it both on his television show as well as his radio show for months. Beck has his own ardent following; if Colbert attempts his own rally, he should attract thousands as well. With an already highly publicized web campaign, gaining as much fervor as Beck's rally in a matter of days, the "Restoring Truthiness" rally should attract more attendees than Beck's. Colbert, ever the ham and master showman, will probably cater to his masses and hold the rally. Such a coup not only makes for a great show, but for great ratings as well.

If anything, the rally will prove how many people are politically left-leaning, if nothing else. With the constant media attention the Tea Party and the like have been receiving of late, such an answer to their attention is not only inevitable, but welcome. This could prove to be the comedic shot in the arm the state of politics needs today. With the heavily watched, all-too-important mid-term elections right around the corner, the American audience needs some light-hearted relief.

Much of the American public has been too serious about politics, and it's about time we see that we could still laugh at the ridiculousness of it in public with the rest of the world watching. Also, with a scheduled Quaran burning and the Mosque debate also at the news forefront, we need to show the world the other side of the American political ideology. If nothing else, anything to sway the attention away from the anti-Muslim sentiment. We are not all haters of anything remotely different from the stereotypical American life, and it's about time we prove it.

It has been hinted that Colbert will make a mention of the proposed rally on tonight's broadcast.
