On November 22, 2009, "The Candle Shoppe of the Poconos," was featured on, Animal Planet's new series, "The Haunted." "The Candle Shoppe of the Poconos," is located on Route 611 and 314 North, in Swiftwater, Pennsylvania.

"The Candle Shoppe of the Poconos," is a one of a kind candle shop, having a generous stock of various sized candles, crafts, jewelry and clothing, crafted yard ornaments and crafted wood lawn furniture, among other numerous items. Besides being a favorite tourist destination, "The Candle Shoppe of the Poconos," holds another haunted secret.

In 1901, this beautiful three story mansion built in the 1800s was occupied by a scientist and his family. Mr. John Redwood Fisher, Dr. William Redwood and Dr. Richard Slee were scientists who ran a biological lab in the basement. Monkeys were used as lab specimens and were kept in cages. The monkeys were unfortunately decapitated when they became diseased and reportedly buried on the property. The monkey's lab cages are still evident in the basement. This information and research was noted via Jim and Linda Schlier's website. You can still see the dated stone on the front of the brownstone.

Jim Schlier bought this interesting brownstone for his wife, Linda Knipe Schlier. It originally was an antique shop before they converted it into, "The Candle Shoppe of The Poconos." Linda has previous experience making her own candles for other candle shops in the area, and continues to make the highly scented candles in stock.

Soon after opening the store, Linda and several employees started to experience strange and frightening paranormal activity. Candles were falling off the shelves, and even more astonishing, monkey chattering and scampering were heard throughout the two stories. Linda contacted the, Pennsylvania Paranormal Society of PA, to report the strange occurrences. After research was performed, Animal Planet was notified and the strange history of the brownstone and reported paranormal activity was featured on their new show, "The Haunted." This show is based on haunted animal activity. A show you must catch to hear the full story and history of this old brownstone.

"The Candle Shoppe of the Poconos," is a magnificent place to explore. From my experience as you wander through each room you can sense the history. The stone fireplaces are still present, taking up entire walls. The wonderful aromas of long lasting scented crafted candles will waft around you and surround you. Each room display has so many items to offer, besides candles. You'll find yourself looking for any signs of paranormal activity. Of course there are many crafted monkeys to buy, and you may wonder if any lab monkeys will jump out and pounce while you explore.

The staff of, "The Candle Shoppe of the Poconos," are extremely customer friendly and will gladly take the time to talk to you and share their personal paranormal experiences if you ask.

In October 2010, "The Candle Shoppe of the Poconos," will be featuring a brand new haunted exhibit, opening up the basement area to visitors, so you can experience and view the remains of the biological lab including original monkey cages, with your own eyes. Be warned, it's fright time, just in time for Halloween. I was there when workers were building the outside framed haunted mansion, and it's scary just looking at it. Take the opportunity to stop by and view this exciting new addition to, "The Candle Shoppe of the Poconos." And don't forget to browse the amazing stocked shelves. You won't be able to leave without buying a bag full of items, and you'll find yourself being a repeat customer. "The Candle Shoppe of the Poconos," isn't just for candle lovers.

Fascinating story. Brought back memories of a very popular saturday night program during the '60s. Hans Holzser the Ghost Hunter.

Interesting, I went to the website and listened to the testimonies of the investigators. I think I'll steer clear of this landmark. cheers )
