The Canine Alarm Clock

Donna Cavanagh
The skies were a gloomy gray
I could hear the raindrops falling outside
A perfect day to hide beneath the covers
If I could only convince my dogs to abide

But no, their canine internal clocks
Have 6 AM as their time to run
They jumped on the bed and rustled my blankets
"Get up, get up! The day's begun!"

I tried to tell them it's raining and cold
You would think they'd appreciate the warning
They hate the garden hose even in the hot weather
Why face a cold and drizzly morning?

But it's six o'clock and that is all they know
So, begrudgingly, I dragged myself out of bed
Not real happy with my four-legged children
Who appeared so perky while I was half-dead

I opened the back door to let them out
They stared at the rain and then back at me
Then turned around and went back up to bed
No longer did they feel the need to pee

"Oh no," I said as I followed them upstairs
"You wanted out - now go do what needs to be done
You got me out of a warm, comfy bed
You can at least go out there and attempt number one!"

They seemed to understand my words
They both slunk down to the back door
They ran outside and in synchronized motion
Added their own puddles to the grass as it continued to pour

So, now they are asleep on the living room sofa
The gas fireplace has them toasty and warm
Maybe if the wind and rain are back tomorrow morning
They will opt to sleep in and not greet the storm?

I don't know Mr. Lund, I think my baby pooches might not be thrilled with you. This is not a nice attitude coming from a man whose best friend or one of them anyway, is a jack ass.

Dogs do not understand "sleep-in" But they are children. Thanks and God bless. ℳ.ℋ.

Oh, how I empathize with you, my dog does that same not-going-out-in-the-wet thing after getting me out of the warm bed.

Cute. Reminds me of when our bassette hound was still alive and every morning my mom would let him out and when he came back in he'd come to wake me up for school by jumping into the bed and right on top of me. You can't stay asleep when you've got a nearly 60 pound bassette hound jumping on top of you lol. Nice poem
