The Capital of the World. Yes I Admit It!

Start Spreading the News

Richard Davis
As a guy from Chicago I hate to admit it, but New York is still the place.

I flew in Wednesday. Missing of course was the familiar twin towers of the World Trade Center. I have a history with New York. I first went there with my back up, expecting the worse. I steeled my resolve to give it right back to those rude New Yorkers.

I was completely disarmed when my plane touched down in New York and the taxi driver chatted all the way in about this and that. He was a great guy. That was a long time ago. My ride in forced me to let my guard down.

I'm glad I did.

New York goes on and on and on, its buildings, its people, its excitement, its verve.

This time I had no time to do much but sit in meetings on 42nd Street. The miracle on 42nd Street was that I didn't fall asleep during the meetings. I walked a bit one morning, past the Empire State Building. I didn't go up this time. It was early and the observation floors weren't open anyway. Not this time. No sky high view of New York, the Island at the Center of the World.

I was in and out, and I missed connecting with a friend.

My thoughts also went to my godchild, somewhere newly married in Manhattan. No time for a visit with her this time either.

But I was worried about things at home. My sump pump was on the fritz, and I was worried about a flooded basement, so I went to the airport and waited standby for an earlier flight.

There's something about New York.

It is the capital of the world with all its bluster, and it is the grubby discount store on Lexington.

New York. It's about spreading the news. Be a part of it.

Thanks Michelle. The least safe part of the trip was the drive back from O'Hare on 294.
