The Case of the Mysterious Feet

Carol Roach
Many of you already know about the case of the missing feet that made news worldwide. These feet have been washing up along the south, British Columbia shores clad in sneakers between August 2007 and November 2008. The story is so bizarre and so baffling that is had been the focus of a National Geographic Channel program.

What is the scope on the mysterious severed feet?

Odd feet washing up on shore at different times, seven was discovered between August 2007 and November 2008 as previously stated and now a seventh one was found in Port Angeles across from the Juan de Fuca straight. This last foot was not in a sneaker but a hiking style shoe. Nevertheless it was still mysterious enough to give Geographic channel Filmmaker, Anna Fitch the desire to investigation further.

Feet Found To Date

What we know so far:

According to The Victoria Times Colonist, March 13, 2009 - http://www.timescolonist.com/news/Mysterious+feet+catch+eyes+world/1384941/story.html The first foot in the sneaker was found on Jedidiah Island, it was a size 12 men's campus sneaker for the right foot. This sneaker has actually been identified belonging to a depressed man who had been missing for a year. The second shoe was a Reebok size 12, found on Gabriota Island. These shoes found on August 20 and then again on August 26 belonged to different people.

On February 2, 2008 a third shoe, Nike, size 11 was found on Valdez Island.

The sex of the victims changed on May 11 when a woman's New Balance size 7 was found on Kirkland Island.

On June 16. 2008, they found the match to the right shoe found on Valdez Island. And the match to the hiking shoe was found on July 31, west of Port Angeles. Finally the match to the woman's shoe was found on May 22 in Richmond, B.C.

But that is not all they found.

It seems that there are some pranksters out there who do not care about how the people who are missing love ones feel. For on June 18, 2008, an animal's foot wrapped in a sock was found washed ashore on a campsite in Ladner, B. C. This shoe was a hoax of course, and a very cruel joke to the people of British Columbia and the families of the missing persons everywhere.

Trouble with the Investigation so far:

It is an ongoing investigation. The job of the RCMP is to find out why these feet are floating in from the Pacific Ocean. The RCMP need to find who these feet belong to by investigating missing person's reports and sampling DNA The RCMP want to determine what happened that these victims of the severed feet in the first place.

The trouble is the RCMP need to be able to identify the severed feet and link them to the humans they once belonged to. That way they can then determine if the people went fishing and had an accident, if there was foul play or if the people in question committed suicide. Even the victims of 2004 tsunami have been thought of as possible candidates for the missing feet.

To date no missing persons reports match what is known about the feet other than the depressed man. It is a long and arduous process trying to find and identify whom these feet belong to.

Problems with investigation:

A decomposing body floating in the water will become weak causing the limbs to break off. The uncertainty of the length of time these feet have been in the water, the water temperature and the possibility of the feet further putrifying when washing against the rocks all make it more difficult to predict to whom these feet belong.

They should check mortuaries near the body of water, particularly those handling the bodies of the poor and homeless. The men's feet mentioned are size 11 and 12, which probably belonged to men over six feet tall -- and corpses possibly too long to fit properly in the standard casket for Potters Field burials. Cut off the feet, and the body fits the casket.
