The Cause and Effects of Psoriasis

GK
There are many conditions of the skin that are caused by outside influences which irritate and inflame the affected areas. There are relatively few conditions that are caused by a chronic disorder. Wrinkling of the skin is one such disorder that is common to every person and this caused by the loss of nutrients and moisture. However wrinkles can be corrected by the use of a cream, psoriasis on the other hand is a skin disorder that cannot be corrected.

Psoriasis creates excessive skin production in certain locations on the body. Although psoriasis can appear anywhere on the body it usually appears at the joints. The excess skin production builds upon itself and irritates the surrounding areas of healthy skin. This rapidly accumulating skin deposit creates a white scaly appearance encircled by red irritated brown skin. It is a condition that reappears over time and can vary in severity with each reappearance. Although the cause of psoriasis has not been defined, there are theories that suggest that people who suffer psoriasis have a genetic predisposition to the condition.

Psoriasis has been experienced throughout the history of mankind but despite this extensive experience the list of active and effective treatments is still very small. The condition causes much pain, irritation and itchiness but perhaps the worst symptom of psoriasis is the social impact and the effect upon the individual's personal psyche. In a social structure so focused upon personal attractiveness and beauty, having red and white blotchy marks all over one's skin can create a difficult obstacle for self confidence.

There are many different types of psoriasis but the commonality among all is the appearance of red and white blotchy locations where extremely rapid and excessive skin growth has occurred. Certain situations can exacerbate the symptoms these include excessive alcohol intake, stress, and an unhealthy diet. Treatment of psoriasis is made even more challenging by many differences in the condition exhibited between individuals. This limits the effect of any particular psoriasis treatment making the commercialization of creams or other medication very difficult. Doctors must use a trial and error approach to find the best medication for their patients. Treatments include various skin applications of creams, exposing the skin to ultraviolet radiation or administering injections or pills. Over time however the psoriasis condition can become resistant to any particular treatment. Alternative treatments include the use of fish that actually feed on the affected skin areas and also simple exposure to the ocean and sun. Unfortunately these alternative treatments have their own bad side effects that may lead to cancer. The key, then, for the person with psoriasis is to focus on leading a stress free lifestyle with emphasis on a healthy diet.
