The Certainty of Uncertainty

Mike Gordon
Life is filled with uncertainty. Face it, when we get up in the morning - even if we have plans - we're faced with uncertainty. Some nice guy said that nothing is certain except taxes and death - and we're still uncertain about when we'll die.

The word "uncertainty" is currently being used several times a day by the media - mainly in reference to the economy. The word, as used, carries with it a connotation of negativity and fear when discussing the future of the economy. That's unfortunate because fear is one thing we need less of these days.

How can we deal with uncertainty? First of all, it's important to understand that uncertainty is born , in part, by circumstances that are beyond our control. The fact is that our lives - let alone the economy - are pretty much out of our control. It's also important to remember that whether we recognize or admit it, most of us want to be in control of our lives. Therein lies the conflict.

Is there a solution or a cure? Yes, there is a solution' no, there is not a cure. The solution is for us to accept that we have very little control over our lives, use good judgment in managing little we have control over and stop trying to change hat is beyond our control. The stress and frustration is wasted energy.

Consider this thought as another explanation - things work out exactly the way they're supposed to. While this approach to uncertaianty may not provide any control - it sure makes lack of control easier to accept. The other neat thing about this idea is that in hindsight, we often see why events in our lives work out as they do and we say - oh, yeah - because then it makes sense.
