The Change-Up Soundtrack Review

Featuring Music by the Beastie Boys, Coldplay, Warrant & Red Hot Chili Peppers

Adrienne Jenkins
Often it's the soundtrack composers that get all the acclaim but with The Change-Up Soundtrack, the score's composer John Debney (No Strings Attached) takes a backseat to music supervisor Matt Aberle (Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore) who really ramps up the fun quotient with music that taunts men into second guessing their Facebook marital status.

Always saucy, The Beastie Boys kick it with "Brass Monkey", a cut from their 1990s album Licensed to Ill. Then there's the equally audacious Better Than Ezra's "Juicy" with its funky catwalk strutting beat and its infectious mocking riffs "aw, aw, aw, aw, aw, aw..." from their 2005 album Before The Robots. You may recognize the Better Than Ezra song from Desperate Housewives & Applebees commercials.

From 1990, there's Warrant's "Cherry Pie" which has been used in countless commercials and television shows but is also one of those ultimate MTV video songs that seems to be ideal for buxom ladies to strike a pose while a fan glamorously blows their hair back.

A little alt rock from Cake and "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" from the cd Comfort Eagle released in 2001 finds its way into this summer movie. You may remember the song just as much from the video where people were given a set of headphones and their reactions were taped. Snippets of the song were used in the movies All About Steve and Date Night.

Chris Martin and Coldplay contribute a new track called "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall" which was released as an MP3 EP download on Amazon.com and iTunes in June 2011.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers version of Higher Ground from their 1999 cd Californication has been included on the Soundtrack to The Change-Up. But I wished they had gone with the definitive more funky Stevie Wonder classic from his 1973 album Innervisions.

Other songs include music by Trevor Hall, Ben Kweller, Marvin Gaye, Art Blakely and The Jazz Messengers, The Homemade Jamz Blues Band, Stephen Greaves, Larry Tuttle and Novi Novog, Daniel Lenz as well as a classical selection by Mozart.

The Change-Up Movie Release Date is August 5, 2011. There does not appear to be an official Change-up O.S.T. cd but songs are available as individual downloads.
