The Charms of Fraser Island, Australia

SJD
Fraser Island is a gigantic island of sand approximately 120km by 15km. It was created by thousands of years of long shore drift and is the world's largest Sand Island. People love Fraser Island for many reasons but the vast number of activities is probably number one on that list. It is a great place for any camping enthusiasts, although there are also a couple of lodging places for those who aren't so keen on camping. There is also fishing, hiking, 4x4'ing, and many beautiful freshwater lakes for swimming. However, swimming in the ocean at Fraser Island is a definite no due to its numerous dangers. There are strong underwater currents that can prove deadly, as well as numerous sharks roaming the area. The sights of Fraser Island are beautiful and a definite must see for those on the East Coast Trail.

Sights to See:

Lake Wabby is a beautiful freshwater lake that is easily accessible. It is extremely shallow so do exercise caution. The lake is surrounded by a massive sandblow, and often you will find turtles and catfish in the waters.

Eli Creek is the largest stream on the East Coast, and a popular stop for those visiting Fraser Island and wanting a cool-down.

The Maheno Shipwreck was a former Passenger Line. It was blown ashore by a cyclone in 1935.

The Pinnacles are approximately 5km North of the Maheno. It is a beautiful sight of eroded sand cliffs that have various colours in them.

Indian Head is best-known as a view point high atop some rock cliffs. In the waters below you will often see Sharks, Dolphins, Manta Rays, and occasionally Whales.

The Champagne Pools are located between Waddy Point and Indian Head on an Inland Trail. It offers the only safe saltwater swimming on the island.

Mckenzie Lake is another freshwater lake on the island and one of the most popular. The beautiful turquoise of the water is surprising in a freshwater lake, and the sand is so fine that you will often see women washing their jewellery in it.

Transportation:

There are Vehicle Ferries which will transport visitors between the Mainland and Fraser Island. The most commonly used route is River Heads near Hervey Bay. Many people visiting Fraser Island sign up for a tour as it will arrange your transportation and permits for you, although with many other necessities such as camping equipment.

The Dingoes:

Dingoes are a common sight on Fraser Island, and despite their dog-like appearance caution must be exercised when they are nearby. Tragically a young bay was mauled to death in 2001 on Fraser Island. This tragedy spurred a greater need for tourists to have an understanding of Dingoes, and how to behave around such an animal. There is no an information package for all visitors and regular visits to campers on how to stay Dingo Safe. However, despite this they are beautiful creatures and when respected for their wild instincts can be a sight to behold.
