The Chicago Cub Syndrome

Is Self- Deception Holding You Back

Philip Theibert
It is called the Chicago Cub Syndrome. It is rooting for a lost cause year after year, hoping things will change. Look the Cubs have not won a World Series for over 100 years. Pick up the clue phone, it is ringing. They will never win one.

But it gets scary when the Chicago Cub Syndrome takes hold of our politicians and they continue to throw good money after bad. Examples of the Chicago Cub Syndrome in politics? We can win the war on drugs. Hmm - how is that working out? We have more people in jail than any other nation, we have not made a dent in illegal drugs being sold in the United States and drugs lords are killing each other to capture the lucrative U.S, drug market.

Another example of Congress and the Chicago Cub Syndrome, an example of an astonishing lack of connection with reality ? How about "Peace in the Middle East" . How is that working out?

The Chicago Cub Syndrome? Tougher laws will take care of immigration. Hello - desperate people take desperate measures when it comes to supporting their family. They will take any risk to improve the lives of their children. That is not a bad thing.

Here is a classic example of the Chicago Cub Syndrome. We can clean up politics with new campaign funding laws. How is that working out. If you really want to know, check out the new health care bill. Clean up politics? Good luck. As they say in Chicago - "Vote early and vote often."

But the Chicago Cub Syndrome also works in relationships. How many women and men stay in God awful marriages , because "things will change." She will stop drinking, he will stop running around, someone will get a "good job", someone will quit getting fired, will take personal responsibility and not blame their boss, he will quit golf and pay attention to me, she will quit running up credit card debt ( I know, men do that too)..

Hello - most people do not change. And buying into the concept that someone will change is buying into the Chicago Cub Syndrome. Do not go into a relationship thinking you can change someone , rather ask how bad can they get? If anything people get worse.

And the Chicago Cub Syndome , very analogous to Charlie Brown and Lucy and the football -applies to simple things in everyday life. You know that friend who swears she will be on time next time - NO SHE WON"T. You know that person who is going on a diet next week? That person who will call soon? That person who will pay you back? Welcome to the Chicago Cub Syndrome. The Cubs won't win a World Series and don't wait by the phone. He ain't calling.

The Chicago Cub Syndrome represents our belief in unreality. Sure the Cubs will win a World Series, if I keep smoking, I won't get cancer, if I am obese, nothing will happen, I am just a little tipsy, I can drive....

Think about this. It is very hard to deal with reality and to see through the myths we deceive ourselves with, on so many levels, in so many ways. We can stop global warming ( until everyone in China owns a car ) , racism is over, the downtown of any city will be revitalized- ENOUGH!!!! Our lives cannot be based on deception.: I could be an A student if I tried. My wife will not turn out like her mother. I am special, they will not lay me off

The Chicago Cub Syndrome can be humorous, and deception may be how we all have to stop from going insane. But in what areas of your life does the Chicago Cub Syndrome apply and would your life be better if you acknowledged you were deceiving yourself and moved on?

Would our politics improve on every level, if we stopped and said " Am I applying The Chicago Cub Syndrome" here and I better deal with this situation based on reality and not wishful thinking.

Ah. The Chicago Cub Syndrome, How is it affecting us all?

I'm not sure what to say about this one.

Ah, but the world loves those "Charlie Browns" or the Chicago Cubs Syndromes and their woes! Cheers!

Insanity is doing the same thing while expecting a new result! But I also agree with Pearl -- our past does NOT predict our future IF we get off of autopilot and become aware of why we need to change and work to make it happen. BTW, the Cubs will win a World Championship before the Royals do it again!

We should legalize drugs, tax them, close a bunch of prisons, and build a bunch of schools. In Portugal, they decriminalized all drugs, and it did NOT lead to increased use.

We all have our Chicago Cub syndroms! Excellent examples. Very thoughtful and funny, I truly loved this one.

Philip, I love your humor! But I'm a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and I've got to disagree with you a little bit on this one: some people DO change (but only if they have the insight and want to do so). Anyway, very entertaining article.

The war on drugs? It's a joke! I don't believe they really want to fix it. After all... if there were no drugs there would be no need for drug rehabs and drug counselors. If they really wanted to win the war on drugs, they would not bother with these little people.. they would use the ARMY and go after the cartels with military force.
