The China Star in Duluth MN Has the Best Chinese Food Around

Eating at the China Star Restaurant Brings Good Taste and Economy to the Table

Recently my wife and I were craving Chinese food but wanted to try someplace new. By new, I mean new to us, as the China Star has been around for a number of years. I had heard from a number of people they had good food, but as we live on the opposite side of town with numerous Chinese establishments being closer, we've just never made the journey.

Though I dislike road construction this year the whole city seems to be under construction. We were still able to get to their driveway with minimal inconvenience and secured a parking place right up front near the door. Tending to be early supper diners we arrived around 5:00PM Friday evening to find only a small handful of cars in the lot.

The building that this restaurant is in has been transformed a number of times. It started life as a pizza parlor some 40 years ago and also has done duty as a used car lot. Some would say the building has aged, others would say it has developed character. By no means a pretentious looking place, we expected it to be modest and family oriented.

We were quickly shown to our booth and I was a bit surprised when presented with our silverware wrapped in a linen napkin. Expected nothing fancier then the standard paper napkin silverware package with a tear off paper ring holding it together, this was a nice step up.

I ordered a combination plate of fried rice, chicken egg foo young with chicken wings, and an egg roll. My wife ordered sesame chicken with white rice on the side. The food came promptly, was piping hot and very good. The sesame chicken was nice and crispy plus it was circled with perfectly steamed broccoli spears.

My chicken wings were nicely drizzled with oyster sauce and I was provided a more then adequate bowl of plum sauce to dip my egg roll. The fried rice was as good as any I've had anywhere and the vegetables in the egg foo young had a nice snap to them. Still crunchy, not wilted and soggy from sitting around too long.

Toward the end of the meal the waitress offered more rice for my wife which was appreciated as a good portion of her meal was going home in a box for the next day. I on the other hand belong to the clean plate club and easily polished off everything in front of me.

Having made this excursion twice in recent weeks with pretty much the same results I would happily recommend the China Star to anyone looking for some really good Chinese food. The atmosphere was quiet and friendly, the service was excellent, both courteous and prompt while taking good care of the small details. The food was served up nice and hot and well within a reasonable time frame. Plus it rates higher in quality and taste then most places in the area.

For an inexpensive evening meal you can't beat good Chinese food. Total tab for the two of us came to $18.90 before the tip. I think we've found our new favorite eating establishment.

Sounds like a great place; interestingly, there seems to be a lack of really good Chinese restaurants around here.
