The Christian Fanaticism Behind Glenn Becks' 8/27 and 8/28 Rallies

Jeff Musall
Tea Party types like to say they are in support of liberty and freedom, but what most of them really mean is the liberty to be like them and to worship their god when and how they tell you to. The movement is rapidly becoming a call for theocracy as much as a protest against taxes or spending. The evidence is found in what their leaders have been saying, most especially, Glenn Beck.

If you haven't followed Glenn Beck and what he, and by inference, his rabid followers, are promoting, you need to become aware of the danger around you. Beck is a charlatan and carnival barker, but he has millions of ill-informed and unquestioning followers who are becoming increasingly motivated by fear, hate, and ignorance.

But what kind of world do they want to make? What is the America they envision? Beck and his cohorts see America in a "Great Awakening" that will bring America back to what they see as it's fundamentalist roots.

Glenn Beck recently was interviewed by Wallbuilders to promote his Washington rallies on 8/27 and 8/28. Wallbuidlers is an organization that sees "no conflict between religion and law."

The irony is apparently missed, Beck's minions are so opposed to any mention of Sharia Law, yet cling to claims of Christian Law.

They speak of a "transformational change" coming to America, a reawakening of strict fundamentalism. Make no mistake, Beck wants an America that is in his image. There is little room for differences or dissent.

If they get their wished for American Christian empire, beware if you are atheist, gay, expect women and children to be treated equally, respect minorities, or love real liberty. Just listen to the rhetoric, and be aware of what they are seeking, and stand up and say No!

Not content to have just an outside rally on 8/28, Beck has added a religiously themed event the day before, - sermons will be read, including some from Revolution Era preachers. Because, as a Wallbuilder put it, "If it hadn't been for the sermons, the founders wouldn't have thought right."

When talking about the 8/28 rally and what brought it about, Beck thinks it's God's will. " This is divine providence, this is the Lord's hand" he declares. He says to "expect to witness miracles, 'cause they're gonna happen!

"You just have to stand where the Lord wants you to stand, he'll explain it to you when the time comes." Beck gives as "kinda the reason for 8/28."

Of course, the "Lord" doesn't speak directly, he uses prophets like Beck.

He says he has "been reading Jeremiah, reading about Joshua" and how God demanded them to "wake my people up." Beck sees that demand as his charge. To anyone who hasn't read Jeremiah or Joshua, perhaps you should - they are both full of genocide against non-believers.

Beck speaks about his rally, saying " we need to get all of the preachers together...we need to get all the pastors, the priests, the rabbis - everybody from every faith that understands liberty and freedom....we need to get them all together." Does Beck realize pastors, priests, and rabbis don't represent all faiths? And surely don't represent all Americans?

The mixing of politics and religion is nothing new in America, or the world. Neither are the results. The more secular a government, the more equal and successful it is.

When Beck says "8/27 is school, 8/28 is to show the world what's coming," and that the "spirit of the Lord is going to be unleashed," freedom loving Americans everywhere need to stand against his twisted vision.

It is pretty clear that no one who commented even heard anything that Beck said. This article is total misinformation. You should be ashamed of yourselves. Theocracy? fundamentalism? pay attention, he didn't say anything like that and muses at your stretching of what he did say.

But I must admit, I am happy I left the US. we just don't have extremist, right-wing nutters in Thailand. Thais believe in 'live and let live'. As long as you're note hurting anyone else, they don't care what you do. A refreshing change from my time in America.

Glenn Beck is done. Even the crazy Tea Baggers are distancing themselves from him this week as they realize he's all about making boatloads of money for himself :)

This is all news to me!

Beck is divisive and a fear monger. He's not religious, he's a pure capitalist, bilking the public

Jeff, It’s too late to stop the growth of Beck… In all honesty, you and your style of politics started it…. The fight for our country is ON!! Push a secular agenda and expect to get pushed back… When you get down to the TRUTH… Beck is Truthful.. Any questions go to http://www.politifact.com . After this election in November, Progressives can try again in another 100 yrs., and will have to get a JOB…AND not rely on the Government / Taxpayers.

On the contrary, Jesse - if that pot is allowed to simmer until it boils over, the risk grows that his little movement can actually do damage to America either politically or otherwise....

ugh! Jeff! Beck needs to get a clue. But (to stoke your fury) you're one half of this morass. By even recognizing the 8/28 crap he's got going on, your anger only fuels his fire. Shut off Beck and all the rest! go fly a kite or something

Thanks for a good article. I wonder how he explains that many of the founders were deists, theists, unitarians, and other non-fundamentalist Christians.
