The Christmas I Know

O. Harding
Christmas is my favorite time of year,
When nature's weeping ceases,
Warm, stormy, unpleasant weather
Gives way to cooler, peaceful climes.

The breeze howls on its way through windows,
Trees sway and dance to its merry tune;
Waves lash the shore with youthful glee,
Birds chatter and play enjoying it here.

The trees are happy to stay clothed in green
Grasses flower, shrubs bud in all their best colors;
Our tropical gardens display their most gorgeous dress,
You won't think it is Christmas, you don't understand.

Christmas, I have been told,
Must be nothing but snow,
With naked trees and howling cold winds
That freezes your bones still.

They sing about Santa the Claus,
On a sleigh pulled by Rudolph whose nose is red;
Their Christmas poem echo the same old line
Of holly, mistletoe, and chestnuts roasting on fires.

They never tell of the Christmas I know,
No snow and no Rudolph,
No one walking around
In Eskimo attire.

Only beautiful, sweet weather,
Happy smiling faces;
People enjoying each other,
And sharing all that the season brings.

The sound of melodious carols
Ring out loud and clear,
Where'er my ears turn, music floats
Like wind and birds and trees and sea.

They hardly tell me of Jesus who came,
That He it was who gave Christmas its name;
That He is the star of every Christmas we know,
Instead of the food and the clothes and the booze.

So give me my Christmas,
None other one will do,
Christmas in the tropics,
I hope you love it too.
