The Chupacabra Phenomenon

Douglas Haynes
Chupacabra is the name of a supposed mythological being who attacks different types of animals. It is said that The Chupacabra exists in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Panama, the southern United States and South America, (especially Chile). The Chupacabra reached peak popularity in the 1990s, being used as a tourist image on novelty shirts, key rings, etc. It has also been mentioned in several songs.

Descriptions of this creature vary. The common physical description of Chupacabra is that of a small creature with spiky skin, glowing eyes, and an oval head. This vague description is similar to another paranormal being, the small gray alien beings reported by victims of "alien abductions". Many claimed to have witnessed Chupacabra with a dogs' face and features.

Nobody has produced indisputable evidence of Chupacabras existence yet. Despite this, a great variety of strange animals and 'creature reports' continue in North and South America. Although reports of someone actually seeing a Chupacabra 'in the act' attacking an animal are very rare.

Dead animals presumably attacked by Chupacabra do not have any blood in their bodies and usually exhibit a single hole as a wound. This is unlike the behavior of other predators in that area who simply destroy the corpse.

There are no reports of animals reacting alarmed or presenting any type of resistance to a Chupacabra attack. Usually the owners of mutilated animals do not
report strange noises, barks of guard dogs, or other signs before an attack. Chupacabra tracks are rarely found at attack sites, when present they are similar to large dog tracks with long heels. These tracks often have a long stride of up to 5 meters, indicating that they have great jumping ability.

Sometimes a Chupacabra report is later explained as something else. Attacks by carnivores and hoaxes are sometimes mistaken for genuine Chupacabra attacks. There are many theories as to what the Chupacabras origin is. Some believe the creature is an animal that has not been categorized by conventional science yet, this comprises the crypto-zoological viewpoint. Cryto-Zoology points to the fact that many animals, such as the panda bear, have only been
discovered within the last century and that it's extremely possible other undiscovered animals could exist. Adding weight to this argument was the recent discovery of the coelacanth, an ancient fish thought to be long extinct.

Others hold an extraterrestrial hypothesis, believing the creature to be an alien from space. A few people feel that Chupacabra is a demon or scientific experiment gone wrong. Whatever the true answer is, it's likely that the mystery of the Chupacabra will continue to frighten and amaze people for a long
time to come.

I have never heard of this animal, but I believe it could exist. I surely would not want to run into one on a one way street. Thanks for sharing!
