The Circuit City Liquidation: What You Need to Know

Your Credit Card, Gift Card, Returns, and Warranty Questions Answered

Carly Kullman
With the news that Circuit City will be closing their doors forever, you may be wondering what now? You have have received a Circuit City gift card or you may have been a Circuit City credit card holder. You may have questions and are still looking for the answers. Hopefully this article will help you ease your way through the questions surrounding Circuit City's Liquidation.

Circuit City Gift Card Holders

You may have some Circuit City gift cards stashed somewhere in a pile, but a word to the wise, use them before you lose them. With the Circuit City liquidation, all stores will accept payment for merchandise in the form of cash, Circuit City gift cards, as well as credit cards. While there is no expected closing date set in stone for Circuit City stores, the retailer expects sales to wrap up and close sometime in March of 2009. Your best bet is to get to Circuit City and to use up those gift cards as soon as you can. When the Circuit City stores close after their liquidation sales, the Circuit City gift cards will be nothing more than a useless piece of plastic if not used to purchase something.

Circuit City Credit Card Holders

Circuit City's credit card is handled by Chase bank. While you may be thinking that you will not have to pay off your Circuit City credit card, the truth is, you will still be responsible for the balance of the Circuit City credit card, regardless of whether the store is open or not. You may find it worthwhile to contact Chase and see if they would be able to close your card (if it hasn't been already), and then ask if they would be able to take the credit limit from your Circuit City credit card and to combine it with another credit card that you may have with Chase.

Circuit City Return Policies

All of Circuit City's return and exchange policies are still in effect. So make sure that you take that item you got for Christmas in immediately because the time is ticking. In addition, according to Circuit City's website, items that were purchased before January 16th, 2009, will be subject to a 14 day exchange or refund policy. This means that you technically have until January 30th, 2009 to complete any exchanges or refunds.

But, if you purchase anything during the Circuit City liquidation sale, then be advised, all sales are final. This means that if you purchase that huge TV you've always wanted and it doesn't work when you get home, you're stuck with a huge, nonworking TV.

If you plan on purchasing something at the Circuit City liquidation sale, make sure that it works before you purchase it. Don't be afraid to ask the salespeople on the floor to let you try it out. More than likely they will be more than willing to let you. Why you ask? Well, what else do they really have to lose?

And you can still purchase an extended warranty if you'd like on your big ticket purchase, since Circuit City's liquidation had no effect on the warranty service.

Circuit City Warranty Information

As I mentioned above, Circuit City will still be offering extended warranties on products purchased during the liquidation sale. Otherwise, if you find yourself needing service on something that you did purchase from Circuit City prior to the liquidation, then you might rest a little bit easier knowing that you are not out of luck.

Circuit City's extended warrant service is provided through a third party partner, so whenever there is problems with something, you call the telephone number that is provided on the warranty information and they will be able to assist you with what steps you will need to take to get your item serviced or repaired. Your best bet is to keep all of your Circuit City warranty information in one place so that you have it in case something happens to your item.

If you happen to purchase something during Circuit City's liquidation sale and it becomes defective and you did not purchase a Circuit City extended warranty plan, then you might want to consult your products documentation regarding the manufacturer's warranty.

Circuit City's closing has a devastating effect on everyone, from employees to customers. However, Circuit City's liquidation sale does not have to cause problems or issues when it comes to the Circuit City gift card, credit card, returns, and warranty aspect of it. Just remember, that stores are expected to be fully closed by the end of March 2009. If you have any lingering Circuit City gift cards, you better use them now before it's too late.

  • Returns can be made through Jan 30, for items purchased before Jan 16. After that, all sales final!
  • Gift cards can be used during the liquidation process. Once stores close, the cards are worthless.
  • Warranties purchased from Circuit City are still valid and will be once the stores close.

My wife was harassed, threatened and intimidated by the liquidators at CC today, as she was trying to return a piece of software. Unopened, with receipt, bought just before Christmas.
The liquidators lied to her, saying they were CC employees, that they were taking no returns, and they threatened to call the police when she insisted that they honor the published return policy. The link to the policy on the CC website no longer works. What a surprise.
