The Class of 2011 Can Find Jobs by Looking in the Right Places

Marcia Robinson
Every year almost 3 million new college grads ask themselves- What's next? The Class of 2011 will ask this question but wll also ask - how will I find jobs in a recession? Many new grads in the Class of 2011 will consider grad school, others will consider gap year alternatives and most will have to think strategically about how to find jobs. For the new grads of the Class of 2011 seeking to find jobs, answering these questions in the affirmative can help.

How can I find jobs in industries which are expanding?

If grads in the Class of 2011 are looking to fnd jobs, they have to know how and which industries have been impacted in the current recession. Not all industries have been impacted the same way. Some have contracted and some have expanded. Each graduate in the Class of 2011, should look through this list from Kelly Services of the top 25 fastest growing industries. There are also similiar lists that should be a part of a new grad job search strategy?

How can I use my college major to find a job?

Some new college grads in the Class of 2011 will make the big mistake of clinging to their college majors. New college grads must understand the difference between choosing a college major a now choosing a career. For example, not all Political Science majors work in Politics and not all Psychology majors become Psychologists. New college grads must think beyond the college major.

Am I prepared to go where I can find jobs?

Just as the current recession in the American economy did not hit all industries the same way; it did not impact all geographical areas the same.. The 11 best cities to fnd jobs in the recent Juju's index of millions of jobs included Denver, Colorado; Austin Texas and Salt Lake City, Utah, might be where you want to start a job search. Are you ready to move?

Have I used all college campus resources available to help me find jobs?
A list of resources on your college campus that can help new grads find jobs must include professors, career center, internship office and any professional you can ask to write you a good letter of reference. College career centers are still the best way for new college graduates to connect with employers looking for new grads in the Class of 2011. In the 2010 survey from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, 71% of the students who received job offers had used their college career centers.

Nancy, you are so right. Students fall in love with their majors and it is hard to have them think beyond those majors.

Seriously good advice, Marcie! My own daughter is looking actively for her first professional job so this topic is very prominent for me right now. I totally agree with your point about not looking for jobs so directly connected to your college major.
