The Cleveland Orchestra and the New World Symphony Raise $72,000 for Haiti

Last night January 27th the Cleveland Orchestra and the New World Symphony raised $72,000 for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

The Cleveland Orchestra each year takes up residency in Miami. While in Miami this year they will provide three weekends of subscription concerts and various free concerts throughout the area along with several activities with two music academies, The New World Symphony and the University Of Frost School Of Music. The Cleveland Orchestra has been doing this for the past three years. The free concerts that they provide are for local Miami school children. These concerts are provided to the students at the Adrienne Arsht Center's John S. and James L. Knight concert halls.

This hall had previously been called the Carnival Center for the Performing Arts but was renamed in January of 2008 in honor of Adrienne Arsht who donated $30 million. This is a beautiful venue for classical music and is home to the New World Symphony, the Miami City Ballet, and the Miami Grand Opera.

The New World Symphony is a music academy that was developed by Michael Tilson Thomas who is the conductor of the San Francisco Symphony. New World provides young musicians training in a professional setting to prepare them for orchestra positions. A large majority of these young musicians go on to become members of orchestras throughout the United States. The young musicians audition for their positions and if accepted are offered three year internships. They receive a stipend and housing during their internship with the symphony.

Both of these organizations do a lot of community work and it is admirable that they decided to do a concert to benefit the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.
