The Coffee Wars: Starbucks Vs Dunkin Donuts

April
As a nurse for the past 15 years, I've been among a distinct league of coffee addicts. Long hours, crazy lives and the need to be alert to save lives all the time puts many of my nursing colleagues, including me in the serious coffee-holic category. Most of us have very strong feelings about our coffee. Here's my take on the Dunkins-Starbucks wars.

Price: Dunkin Donuts wins this one hands down. A 16 oz coffee is under $2.00 at Dunkin Donuts, and almost twice that at Starbucks. Dunkin Donuts is definitely the place to go when scraping the back seat for quarters to buy a bit of wake up juice (not that I've ever had to do that, of course).

Caffeine boost: Starbucks coffee is definitely a stronger brew than Dunkin Donuts, which turns off some who prefer a milder taste. A recent study on caffeine content had Starbucks at almost twice the caffeine: 259 mg, vs. Dunkin Donuts 143mg per cup. Caffeine content can be boosted at either establishment after a serious all-nighter by adding a shot of espresso.

Taste and Variety: Dunkin Donuts regular blend is an Arabica bean flavor that is much milder than Starbucks. Dunkin Donuts has flavors that are easily distinguishable, such as vanilla, raspberry, hazelnut and toasted almond. Starbucks is a stronger, heavier taste, with a bitterness that is hard for many to swallow. And their flavor varieties often leave a bit too much to the imagination. What might " Arabian Mocha Sanani" tell me about what my coffee tastes like, and why should I care. For specialty drinks, Starbucks does have a couple of tasty choices, my favorites being the caramel macchiato, and of course the legendary frappucino. Dunkins coffee coolatas are also tasty, and my favorite is the kahlua flavor. The new fruit coolatas and smoothies are loaded with sugar, and great if a sugar buzz is what you are looking for.

Sizes: Sizes at Dunkin Donuts are (thankfully) in English, and I don't have to wonder why a small is a tall and take a class in Italian to order my coffee! Sorry Starbucks!

Atmosphere: While I am of the drive through persuasion, many find the relaxing, bistro-style setting of Starbucks soothing and enjoyable. Starbucks wins hands down if you want to sit at a table and sip cappucino while pondering the works of Chaucer over a Kenyan mocha dingo nut crunch coffee. But I'm already at work by then, sipping on my Dunkin's!

Overall, while some prefer the high price and snob appeal of Starbucks, for sleep deprived folks on a budget like me, Dunkin Donuts is the all-around winner!

"The author said they don't have to scrape the back seat for change. Wow, a lot of us have been there given all the outsourcing of jobs. Must be nice to have a full time, well-paying job all the time, eh?"

I took that as sarcasm on the author's part. Even the most wealthy of people have probably had to do this from time to time. Chill out and don't take everything so personally.

As a side note, Dunkin > Starbucks. No question. Even if I'm only commenting on taste, and not even price or convenience, Dunkin Donuts coffee is by FAR superior.

I favor Dunkin Donuts over Starbucks by far. The prices at Starbucks are horrible and when I had to work near one, I loved getting a coffee every day but it was EXPENSIVE! DD is much more affordable and the ones I've been too, the customer service is wonderful.

The author said they don't have to scrape the back seat for change. Wow, a lot of us have been there given all the outsourcing of jobs. Must be nice to have a full time, well-paying job all the time, eh? Just had to comment on that one, as it really bothered me that the author felt the need to point out the lack of poverty on their side.

A 16 oz. Starbucks coffee for twice the price of a $2 Dunkin Donuts coffee? That is not true.

I was in Starbucks this morning and its $2.10, if you compare apples to apples, (straight brew).

Latte's, chinos, etc. are $4-6, but lets be fair and compare the price of similar products.

I found this article to have a strong anti-Starbucks bias, which reeked of something not quite journalistic. I think that's problematic for this website because you're not really providing straight information, but a skewed version of someone's exaggerated and highly suspect opinion.
