The Commonwealth Games Still Faces Accommodation Problems
Despite Efforts to Make Athletes Accommodation Ready Problems Still Exist
An earlier report today told on one athlete from South Africa who found a Cobra in his room, but it's not just the wildlife that is causing problems right now.
An Indian boxer went to lie on his bed on Saturday, only to find that the mattress had been placed on the bed frame, but no supports had been put in place, and so he went straight through the bed onto the floor.
According to the secretary general of the Commonwealth Games organising committee, approximately 150 rooms in the athletes village are still not ready to be used.
The quality of the workers who had been employed to build the accommodation left a lot to be desired, said the secretary.
As well as the filthy dirty rooms that were shown in the media last week (see pictures), workers have apparently spit chewing tobacco on the walls, which has created stains that cannot easily be removed.
The English team arrived at the end of last week, and were put up in hotels until Monday when their rooms were supposed to be ready. I am sure that there will be plenty of photographic and video footage in the media of the accommodation once the games begin, and also once the athletes return.
Even though India had been awarded the Commonwealth Games in 2003, construction on stadiums and the athletes village did not begin until 2008, and this is not doing anything for India's international image at this time.
With the huge success of the Olympic Games in neighbouring China in 2008, the Indian government had hoped that their staging of the Commonwealth Games this year would help to showcase the country's growing influence in the region, however it looks like the opposite is likely to happen.
The Commonwealth Games are instead so far a major embarrassment for the nation, and with a lot of spectators now unlikely to attend, they will undoubtedly run at a loss too.

Post a CommentThis is unbelievable.
Looks quite slummy!
I laughed out loud when I read that the workers sent in to clean the place had created stains from spitting tobacco on the walls. This is just insane. I think the next Survivor should be held there. :)
crazy turn of events, interesting report
I think the Commonwealth Games may turn out to be a total shambles... mismanaged right from the start. Good report, Tony, thanks!
This doesn't look good for India.
