Learn All 12 Major Scales on Trumpet with This Handy Practice Cheat Sheet

Jesse F. Sears
Learn the 12 major scales for trumpet backwards and forwards to help you as a classical or jazz player. It is important to get comfortable with playing through each of the 12 major scales. Only being comfortable within the framework of a couple of scales will severely limit what you are able to accomplish as a trumpet player.

Here's how to read the following major scale fingering charts. The C major scale listed first begins on the low C. The "o" characters stand for an open valve, while the "x" characters stand for a closed valve.

By the time you reach the major scale trumpet chart for the B major scale, you will likely be pushing the upper limits of your register if you are a fairly new trumpet player. Don't be afraid to drop the scale down an octave if you need to, it is better to become familiar with the sound than pushing yourself to play notes you cannot yet reach.

As you practice each day, you will quickly become more comfortable with each of the 12 major scales on your trumpet. Make a daily major scale drill part of your practice regimen, and you will see great dividends in your ability as a trumpet player.

Good luck, and happy practicing!

A note from the author: I have double-checked these fingerings with my horn just now. There is one "alternate fingering" in one scale that still produces the note and was included because it is easy. All other notes are correct using the standard fingerings. I repeat, I have checked this on my own horn. If you are having problems it is because you are trying to drop down an octave with these fingerings. The scale sheet moves up in tone by one half-step in succession, and if you can't yet hit the higher notes then practice more. If you'd like to find the fingerings to drop some of the scales down an octave, fine, I am sure you can find that. My simple scale sheet has reached over 100,000 now and I have received countless comments about people it has helped. If you think this is wrong, try it on your own horn again.
