Crash diets ignore the important principle of a gradual weight loss. They often induce weakness, interfere with normal function, and can be damaging to the body. Commonly, people abandon such diets from time to time out of "taste fatigue" or boredom, gain back weight then repeatedly return to the diet. Such seesawing rise and fall of weight is an added stress on the body that is often worse than the overweight.
Physicians are especially concerned about these unsound methods of weight loss for a number of reasons. For one, fad diets emphasize an unbalanced diet. When these diets are followed for any length of time, malnutrition and serious harm can occur.
Imbalanced diets, which stress one type of food over others, are very risky. A high protein diet, for example ignores the function of carbohydrates which supply quick energy to the brain and muscles, as well as bulk for proper elimination. High liquid protein diets should not be taken without close physician supervision.
Weight reduction is a matter for personal medical advice. A person may be overweight due to overeating or it may be linked to an underlying disease such as diabetes. In either case a person requires specific medical treatment. Before counseling a patient on weight loss, the physician considers not only the health status of the patient, but also such factors as sex, age, height and body size. The proportion of body fat to body muscle, the rate of metabolism, the physical activity and the eating habits of the individual are also considered.
With this information, the doctor is able to make the individual recommendations each patient needs to reduce to your proper weight level and to maintain this level once it has been reached.
You will learn the most effective way to lose weight is not through fad diets or weight loss pills but by decreasing your food intake and increasing your energy expenditure. When you learn this principle, you will be able to lose weight easily and keep it off permanently.
