The Consequences of Hate Filled Speech

Speech

Kurt Evans
In today's political arena, people don't think about the consequences of hate filled speech. While, yes, we do have the right to free speech in this country, The United States Of America; this doesn't mean that we should just spew out what's on the tip of our tongue without first thinking about what it is that we're saying.

Words Have Power

Whatever your political, philosophical, or personal agenda may be, you have to realize that words have power. When you put ideas into other people's minds, you have to assume some kind of responsibility for giving them those ideas.

Rethink

We live in a world where actions speak louder than words and, maybe as a society we should rethink the way we do things.

Fuel For The Fire

If you knew that your words were part of the fuel for the fire that motivated somebody to shoot someone or a whole group of people, like what happened yesterday in Arizona where a Congress woman, Gabrielle Gifford, and a judge were among those that were shot, I would hope that you would have the common decency to rethink your approach and what you're communicating to the people around you and the rest of the world.

Consequences For What We Say

No longer can we sit back and think that there are no consequences for what we say. We were taught to believe that there are consequences for what we do, but not for what we say. Maybe, we should think about, the consequences, of what we say and how it affects others. In this day and age, through Facebook and other forms of social media, people are communicating more about themselves and their lives than ever before.

Sticks And Stones

When I grew up, we used to say," sticks and stones may break my bones, but, words will never hurt me. This way of thinking needs to be rethought because, the truth is, while sticks and stones may break my bones, words have the power to scar me for life and have me in therapy forever. While my therapist thanks you, my bank account, doesn't.

Consequences

While there are consequences for what we do, there are also consequences to what we say, and this includes, hate filled speech.

Tragedy

Whether you agree with me or not about hate filled speech, what happened yesterday, in Arizona, was a tragedy, where people got killed and injured. I would just like people to start to think about the consequences to hate filled speech because, clearly, yesterday was a prime example of what can happen when you just accept hate filled speech as part of normal life.

Hate Filled Speech

Hate filled speech is not normal, and like anything else in life, there are consequences to hate filled speech. And, that's a fact.

Makes me wonder the very same thing when I see the responses in Yahoo! News and YouTube comments. There are better ways to spend your time people!

This is great! Too many people are blinded by what they say and don't realize that their words do make a difference. It's like wrinkling up a piece of paper (saying bad words), then saying "sorry" (trying to iron out the paper) but the wrinkles will stay there forever no matter how hard you try to iron out the wrinkles.

You are so right. Words instill ideas which lead to actions. Nice job on this.

Do you think the shootings in Arizona were provoked? Sad tradgedy for sure, but not clear on what got him going.
