The Constitution... What Constitution?

Who Has the Right to Lose Their Rights First?

W. J. McCormack
Over the past year I have almost forgotten that I lived in America, a country founded on principles of freedom and equality. These principles have been redefined over the history of this nation expanding legal protection and rights to minorities and women. The abolishment of slavery, desegregation and suffrage for African-Americans and women have all been pinnacle moments in the development of America. A battle I did not realize had to be fought was freedom of religion. The way I understand the constitution, the ruling document of the land, is that a person is free to practice his or her religion with no impedance on them. There are some who would have us forget our constitution because of an evil act committed by extremists on September 11, 2001. These opponents of a place of worship being built two blocks away, where there is already worship taking place in an old Burlington Coat Factory building, apparently believe all Muslims to be terrorists and this building is a victory symbol of 9/11. Well guess what is a victory symbol, this retardation of a society, the fact that nothing is standing as any sort of memorial at the WTC site, the fact that men and women who claim to be patriots spit on the very foundation of America by thinking they can deny the right of a religious people to build wherever they damn well please. Remember Pearl Harbor, no Shinto shrine. Remember the Cold War, no Russian Orthodox church. Remember the Civil War, no more Southern Baptist churches. Remember the Inquisition and the Crusades, no more Catholic cathedrals. To pacify the Christian population we shall remember the Crucifixion and not let anymore synagogues be built. The true victory of the ones responsible for 9/11 is being boasted now as they laugh at the division of America over this petty and immature debate. To truly respect 9/11, don't let fear rule your life.
