The Controversial Ground Zero and Ground Zero Mosque

Shirley Norling
Sept. 11, 2010 will be here again before we know it. It's another anniversary that is just a painful reminder most Americans would like to forget, but probably never will. Numerous lives were lost that day at the site known as Ground Zero. Reconstruction plans are in the making to bring new life back to this area. Along with the plans comes a lot of controversy as to exactly what should be built in the area surrounding the site of Ground Zero.

The Cordola House, a cultural center with a prayer room is one of the buildings that is considered being built at 45 Park Place, the site of a former Burlington Coat Factory building. The facility will serve as a YMCA type community center for interfaith bridge-building. This building, called by many "The Ground Zero Mosque" at Ground Zero is what
all the controversy is about.

Weather it is just a misunderstanding or a ploy by the opponents to stop construction of the building, the Cordola House is not being built at Ground Zero. 45 Park Place, where the building is being built is "near" Ground Zero but not actually "at" Ground Zero which is a couple of blocks away. It supposedly will not overlook or overshadow Ground Zero once the new World Trade Center is built.

The Cordola House should not be called a mosque either, as it is being designed as a multi -purpose complex with a space set aside for nondenominational prayer. It is not a single-purpose house of worship for Muslims. Although Muslims regularly pray at 45 Park Place, this building is not being built as a mosque for them.

I personally don't see anything wrong with the Cordola House being built at 45 Park Place if it is going to be used for the purposes stated above. The memories of Sept. 11 will remain in our hearts forever. In my opinion I think this is a new beginning and we're showing the world we're not going to be defeated by terrorists and live in fear for the rest of our lives. We're strong and resilient survivors and must move on. We won't forget the past and all those innocent lives that were lost that day but we are a nation that can and must move forward.

This is my opinion, and my opinion only. I have the utmost respect for all Americans no matter what side they may be on is this issue. This is one reason why we all have freedom of speech and the right to our own opinions and views here is America. God Bless America!

Well done Shirley...you're the first person I've seen to share my thoughts on the subject.

I guess that legally they have the right to build the mosque any place they choose, but I have to wonder why they want so badly to put it that close to Ground Zero. Maybe I'm just an old sourpuss, but it seems to me a bit tactless, insensitive and in-your-face. I think that's what people object to.

Why didn't people get upset when Japan started buying up everything in Hawaii? They came after us, killed thousands, then bought up everything they could and got wealthy doing it.
