The Controversy Holding Up Raw Milk Consumption

April Horton
There is a growing movement in the United States of progressive health conscious people who prefer to purchase and drink raw milk. Unfortunately there has been a government crackdown in many states over how it can be sold and distributed. In some parts of the country it is hard to even find raw milk. There have even been milk 'busts' and arrests of farmer's selling raw milk. In fact it is downright difficult to find milk in it's pure unprocessed state in many areas of the country.

Milk has been raised consumed by humans since around the 8th century BC. It is only in the last century that the process has been tampered with.

Raw milk is milk that has not been pasteurized, is not homogenized and is free of growth hormones and antibiotics. It comes from grass fed cows who have not been injected with growth hormones or antibiotics. Raw milk is supposed to be much healthier that it's processed counterparts but it has not been proven according to the FDA. Thousand's of people would disagree and many people have used raw milk to cure illnesses, reverse tooth decay and many will praise it's ability to actually boost the immune system. There have also been many false reports about raw milk killing people or making them sick. Much of which could be construed as propaganda. Contrary to what some may want you to believe, others think consuming raw milk is not only safe but protects us with added immunity from the unprocessed milks beneficial enzyme and bacteria. than non organic pasteurized milk.

When ,ilk is process it loses these beneficial bacteria and enzymes making the milk less nutritionally valuable. Many people believe the antibiotics and hormones can be downright harmful for humans to consume. Raw milk contain these beneficial bacteria and enzymes which is why it is so desirable for some people to consume. Pasteurized milk has been shown to cause gastrointestinal and digestive problems in many people. The fact is that many people with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) that can not drink regular milk can in fact digest raw milk just fine without an ill effects. This says a lot about processed milk. Especially when people are going out of their way to purchase it and having to go travel long distances to acquire it.

The production and selling of milk is controlled by each state so laws vary widely from state to state. In many areas of the country there has been crackdown's on dairy's who sell raw milk making it almost impossible for them to continue selling it. Many people opt to buy a cow share which is essentially leasing a cow or goat for milk. Your share money goes toward the maintenance and feeding of your animal In return you will get fresh unprocessed raw milk.. This is one of the best ways to know where your milk is coming from and getting to know your local farmer's. It can be more expensive and usually averages out to around $6 a gallon though the health benefits are worth more than the money to some people.

There are even some private campaigns being started to promote the use of raw milk and to support those buying and selling it. Like the real milk campaign which promotes the use of raw milk and touts it's health benefits. the hope is that consumer's will think about where their food is coming from and put their dollars to good use supporting the practice of producing healthy and organic food choices.
