The Cost of Illegal Immigration on Our Nation

There is a counter that tracks illegal immigrants and you can see it here. As of this writing, there are nearly 24 million illegal immigrants living in America.

USA Today announced that, "Homeland's screening policy of illegal immigrants is flawed" and my first thought was that this isn't breaking news. Our policy on illegal immigration is draining the Nation. You can read the USA Today article here.


I would like to preface this article by stating that I am American daughter. I am also the granddaughter of a LEGAL immigrant. My grandfather came through Ellis Island legally. Therefore, I am not opposed to immigration but I do oppose illegal immigrants as they are a burden to our Nation.

Here are some verifiable facts that should make you stand up and shout out to your representatives to reform the illegal immigration status quo in this country. The illegal immigrants are draining the last few remaining drops from our melting pot.

Illegal immigrants do not have SSNs but they can apply to the IRS for an ITIN or an Individual Taxpayer ID Number. In 2010 alone, the IRS processed more than 3 million returns with ITINs. Over two million of these individuals never paid a single cent to the federal government. If you do not believe this is possible, you can see the article on here.

It gets far worse. Children born in the States to parents who are illegals are called "Anchor Babies." The Anchor Babies are born in America every single day and according to a Time article, almost 4 million Anchor babies are born that are entitled to American citizenship under the 14th Amendment.

For the record, the 14th Amendment states, "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."

In other words, any child born here becomes a citizen and these "babies" educational needs by some reports, are expenditures as high as $50 billion.

Think about those numbers the next time your child is trying to pay for a college education.

I wonder why we ever closed Ellis Island.

    My grandfather passed through Ellis Island too. I think we need to look at some of these Amendments that were written hundreds of years ago. Times have changed.

    Prejudices and ignorant generalizations (all immigrants want to work/all immigrants want govt. money, etc.) keep us from being able to move forward on this issue. There has to be some level of amnesty. Otherwise, people who were brought here as children will be forced to return "home" to what is essentially a foreign country. Mexico, our neighbor, is growing increasingly unsafe and unstable. If something doesn't change soon, we'll be granting asylum.

    Agreed. We need to tighten up our immigration so that our own citizens are taken care of before immigrants.

    I agree, Michele, with all the points made. It would be easier to swallow if illigal immigrants would at least obey our laws, but tragically, a woman was killed not 100 miles from here in front of her 4 year old daughter (who escaped) by an illegal male immigrant.

    The 14th Amendment must be amended and stronger laws need to be enacted to prevent the bankruptcy of our country!
