The New Covenant: Heart of the Family

Joyce Gentile
This article explains my inspiration for the sketches in figures one and two and why I named this article The New Covenant: Heart Of The Family

The sketch in figure one combines both testaments of the Bible in the Eucharistic sensibility. In the background stands the tablets, that held the ten commandments, handed down to Moses. In the forefront are the Eucharistic gifts of bread and wine, body and blood. In the very center of the sketch stands the cross representing the sacrifice of Christ. The heart of Christianity, the family, is depicted in the center of the cross.

My inspiration for this piece is the historical church from the time of God's first communication with His people as He came to the people of Israel. The theme is we are one people from the day of God the Father's revelations to Abraham to the sacrifice of His Son Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord. The words of Christ at the last supper placed on the tablets of the Commandments tie both both testaments, old and new, together graphically.

The graphic representation of the Heart and Holy Family placed over the cross gives us the full circle of sacrificial gift and today's recipients of the gift of the cross. It is this message which is meant to be fully realized as we hear Jesus say "I am with you always until the end of the age." (Quoted from NIV Bible; Mathew 28:20) The end of the age means throughout all time.

The willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his only son and the gift of God the Father via the sacrifice of his only son, Jesus Christ, echoes the familial ties of the people of God and God Himself.

Figure two is a graphite sketch titled Year Of The Eucharist. It depicts the Holy Trinity as related in sacrificial union. The star burst and cross united represent the God the Father's gift of his only Son who died for our salvation. The host and chalice depict the Eucharistic gift which is offered at every Mass. The Holy Spirit is represented by the transparent dove.

If viewed together, these sketches represent my understanding of the Eucharistic mystery for all time.
