The Cowboy Rides No More

Michael Fuller
The dubiousness of a dragon has become more intriguing
than the hapless damsel trapped with-in his lair;
and the Spanish Main has grown sadly silent--
no more are pirates seen sailing there.
Merlin, magic, and the knights of the table round
can be found only in books of legend and lore;
and in the wild, golden West
the cowboy rides no more.

These things I thought would save me
when I was young, my fancy free to roam around;
but now I see them as formless fantasies
since time has planted my feet firmly upon the ground.
High adventure is of a time long past,
and there is no more monster behind the closet door;
the thrill in life is now getting the job done
and the cowboy rides no more.

Such are the dreams that youth may hold,
it's sad to watch them pass away,
but we can not live for times gone by,
when we must worry only about today.
But someday, if we're lucky
we can sit back, watching, and grin
and proudly say to the world
"the cowboy rides again".
