The Crazies is Smart Enough to Make You Wonder.

This is a Pretty Good Take on a Government Cover Up

Jay Braun
I watched this film on demand and found it to be a pretty good movie. I watched it twice and the second time I appreciated it much more since I missed thirty minutes of it the first time I watched The Crazies. This is not really a zombie movie, but the people who become infected end up acting like zombies but with faster movement and don't seem to have as much of a desire to eat human flesh as zombies in movies like Nigh of the Living Dead. George Romero, creator of the Night of the Living Dead, actually was involved in the 1973 movie and the remake that I will be discussing here.

This movie is about an outbreak that is isolated to one town as opposed to a worldwide epidemic or pandemic. Ogden Marsh, Iowa is a small sleepy mid-western town in the middle of nowhere. The government was working on a biological weapon (I know they are not supposed to) called the Trixie virus that is designed to destabilize populations. A plane carrying some of the virus en route to being destroyed crashes causing the Trixie virus to leak into the town's water supply. It does not infect everyone though.

Our main hero is Sheriff David and his wife Judy. One day at a baseball game the local town drunk comes out onto the field with a shotgun. David asks him to put it down. He aims it at the David causing David to shoot him since he would not listen to reason. Other town residents start to do strange things. One guy burns his house down with his wife and son inside. While the man who burned his house down is in their custody the Sheriff and his deputy Russell start to think something is up with how violent the prisoner is getting as well as oozing blood from his mouth and nose. They also discover the airplane that was carrying the Trixie virus and dead pilot in a local swamp.

The town is then suddenly overrun by the Military and put into quarantine. They begin checking people for fevers as a sign of being sick. Because she is pregnant, Judy has been running a fever and is taken with the people believed to be sick. This does not make David very happy and he makes his way back to try to find her. along their way they encounter survivors, crazies, and hostile military forces that they have to deal with. David, Judy, Russell have to fight the army and townsfolk in order to survive.

This is a really good movie and I advise anyone interested in horror movies to watch it. This shows how sometimes the government will go to brutal and extraordinary means in order to keep word from getting out about things they are doing that they are not supposed to like making biological viruses and weapons. I am really curious of a sequel to something like this. I think it would do pretty well.
