The Culprit Behind Your Flaky Skin

Abby Willow

Approximately 60% of people worry about their sensitive skin, and more and more people claim having sensitive skin that they strive to take care of in recent years. Flaky skin is irritated, red, dry, and worrisome skin that can be difficult to take care of, and many of us wash and scrub our skin to try to eliminate the redness and flaky reactions of our poor skin. But there is a reason why skin is sensitive in the first place- and it all comes down to the actual care of skin to begin with.

The most common cause of flaky skin lies not in the natural sensitivity of skin itself, but in the products that we use to keep our skin healthy. Products meant to keep away wrinkles, acne and oil are actually the products that cause flaky, dry skin. And flaky, dry skin in turn becomes skin that is actually more prone to wrinkles, acne and oil that is trying to be avoided in the first place! Avoiding the products that cause flaky skin in the first place and replacing them with milder alternatives is the best way to ensure healthy skin that isn't so sensitive.

Avoiding skin care products containing scrub elements, retinoids, and alpha hydroxy acids can greatly improve flaky skin's appearance. Replacing these types of skin care products with mild bar soap, baby hygiene products, and even natural cleansers, like witch hazel or tea tree oil, can improve skin's appearance within 72 hours. Keeping skin moisturized with a hydrocortizone cream (for redness and inflammation) or a moisturizer with niacin (like many stretch mark creams) can ensure healthier skin. And healthier skin is skin that has less oiliness, is less flaky, and absolutely less prone for wrinkles.
