The Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee - A Vacation Area Off the Beaten Path

Vicki Messer
Without question, the state of Tennessee is beautiful from one end to the other. This state is divided into three regions - East Tennessee, Middle Tennessee and West Tennessee. If you have ever traveled through each of these regions, you will readily understand how diverse each region really can be.

Nashville, in middle Tennessee is known for its country music, while Memphis, in west Tennessee is known for its soul food and jazz, as well as Graceland, and East Tennessee is known for its majestic Smoky Mountains.

However, the area between Nashville and Knoxville, known as The Cumberland Plateau also has much to offer. The Cumberland Plateau is a very unique area in Tennessee. The weather conditions on the Plateau are much different from the low-lying areas. In the winter time, the temperatures are usually much colder and the Plateau always gets more snow and ice than most of the state. If you are searching for a vacation spot in Tennessee that is a little off the beaten path without all the huge crowds found in the more common visitor attractions, then The Cumberland Plateau is the place for you!

The Old Allardt Schoolhouse Bed and Breakfast

If you are looking for some very unique lodging along The Cumberland Plateau, you will want to visit The Old Allardt Schoolhouse in Rugby. This is a quaint and charming 1910 schoolhouse that has been converted into a Bed and Breakfast. It is furnished with beautiful antiques, has a cozy front and back porch (complete with rocking chairs!) and sits in the "backyard of the Big South Fork National River and Recreational Area in Allardt." For the comfort of its guests, it is equipped with central heat and air, although that fresh outdoor mountain air is something you won't want to miss! Due to the historic classification of this B&B, smoking and pets are not allowed.
