The Cutting Edge: Chasing the Dream is a great romantic drama. I had seen the second movie in the Cutting Edge series, Going for the Gold, and hated it. I was a little leery of this third installment but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The basic plot is a reversal of the first movie. Instead of a male hockey player, there is now a female hockey player. Instead of the girl falling for the guy, the guy falls for the girl. Besides the role reversals, the plot is a little predictable: the two leads don't get along at first but eventually fall in love and accomplish their goal of winning gold. Yes it is predictable but still very enjoyable.
I did not like second movie Going for the Gold because I felt the male lead character was a jerk and I couldn't understand why Jackie Dorsey, played by Christy Carlson Romano, fell in love with him. Well apparently she realized her mistake because Jackie returns in this sequel as Matt and Francia's new coach and she even makes a comment about having a rough couple of years because of injuries and her marriage. I can only assume she meant divorce in the very unloving way she said the comment. I am glad Jackie returned because Christy Carlson Romano is a very good actress. Matt Lanter was also excellent in the movie. I think he has great potential to be a Hollywood heartthrob. Franica Raisa was also great in her part, very feisty and very natural.
The movie is a great skating movie. They spend a lot of time on the ice and the movie shows all of their routines. The background music was also very good. There are a great couple of scenes with "It's Too Late to Apologize" playing. It was very appropriate for the feeling in the movie at that moment.
The Cutting Edge: Chasing the Dream is a cute romantic drama. I give the movie 5 out of 5 stars.
