The Dalmatian is a very distinctive and easy to recognize breed even for those that aren't hard core dog lovers. He is almost always white with black spots or more rarely, liver-colored, fawn, brindled or gray spots. The Dalmatian is the dog that rides on the firetrucks and was made even more popular by the Walt Disney's classic, 101 Dalmatians. What is this large size dog like as a family or single person's pet? He appears to be easy going and low maintenance? Maybe, but for sure he is full of energy and possess a great amount of stamina. This will be a most playful pet that will require strong leadership from it's owner. This is a breed that is very smart and will spot weakness in it's leader and take advantage of it. They are not hard to train and do well in obedience. This is not the right breed for people in small dwellings or very busy people who don't have time for lots of exercising, attention and training. Dalmatians can even operate as gun dogs.

This breed is thought to have originated in Yugoslavia in the 1400's-1700's and was used as a carriage dog. The Dalmatian matures at a height of around 22-24 inches and will weigh about 50 pounds. This breeds eyes can be brown, blue or amber. The nails will be the same color as the spots. Dalmatians have very large litters so much thought should be put into breeding. The puppies are born with a solid white coat and the spots develop as they get older. Please socialize your Dalmatian puppy or he can be timid and uncomfortable around people and other pets.

This is a breed that will love playing in a good size yard and play well with children. He needs plenty of stimulation and exercise time though, or he might become over excited and too rough for small children.
