The Danger of Human Free Will in Child Evangelism

Mathew Mount
The fundamental problem with the idea that everybody should do evangelism is that some people just are not at all qualified to do evangelism because they are not Christians themselves. The command to go to all nations and present the gospel of Jesus Christ was given to people that knew Jesus Christ very well because they had been with him in person. The problem is that people that don't have a clue about who they're talking about perhaps should not be doing evangelism.

Although children may have the same problem with sin as adults do, this does not make any suggestion as to rational ability for children or adults to make decisions that would relate to the atonement for their sins. A strong point to be made is that all of us may feel that we're making rational intelligent decisions when in fact we don't know everything involved in the reality that we make the decisions in. For example the United States government had administrated a form of social grace to the public for generations, and many people may have thought this to be the result of rational choice made by decision-making. The problem however is that unseen variables that affected our nation along the way related to economic conditions that caused the need for the existence of the national debt that may now soon bankrupt the country.

Just like with the example of the national debt we may think that we have considered all the variables, but the conclusion that we come to from all the thinking that we do is that our very thoughts are ultimately flawed and wrong. The reason why our thoughts are ultimately flawed and wrong is because of sin, and because of the fact that we just cannot measure up to God in our decision-making and in our ability to comprehend what reality is all about. The conclusion of the matter is that we should, as Christians, do evangelism if we believe it to be for the best, but we should trust God for the results of our work.

Another example in biology is that when a person starts changing an ecosystem with even small changes in a controlled environment, what usually happens is that the results give a chain reaction that not even the brightest scientists could fully predict. Whenever the human will is asserted in any way the results can be disastrous unless the will of God matches the will of man. Overall, our will matching God's will may mean that instead of evaluating situations by our intelligence, in order to find a solution, instead we should be focused upon trusting God and developing an understanding of him in order that he may solve problems for us the correct way.

Child evangelism is thus not entirely a subject to think about, but instead it is a subject to pray about. The point is that so many hidden factors may be involved in child evangelism (in each individual case) that only God would know best how to handle the situation with the child. The point is not that child evangelism should be stopped, but the point is that prayer may be more effective than looking for solutions to problems of Child evangelism.
